Hanwha Ocean is accelerating its push into the U.S. naval shipbuilding market through a strategic partnership with Gibbs & Cox, a subsidiary of U.S. defense contractor Leidos, marking a significant shift in its global defense strategy.

The agreement, signed on April 21 (local time) at the Sea-Air-Space (SAS) 2026 exhibition in Maryland, aims to establish a comprehensive collaboration covering ship design, construction, and lifecycle support. The partnership is seen as a critical step for Hanwha Ocean to secure a foothold in the highly regulated U.S. defense market.

Gibbs & Cox is widely recognized as a leading naval architecture firm, having designed a substantial portion of U.S. Navy surface vessels since World War II. Its deep expertise in U.S. Navy specifications and operational requirements makes it a key partner for companies seeking entry into both the U.S. and global naval markets.

Under the agreement, the two companies plan to jointly develop naval vessels optimized for U.S. Navy standards, while also exploring next-generation ship platforms for global markets. They will collaborate on building an integrated supply chain that leverages both U.S.-based and Korean production facilities, and focus on designing ships that are optimized for efficiency and long-term maintenance.

Industry analysts view the partnership as a strategic move by Hanwha Ocean to transition from a construction-focused shipbuilder to a fully integrated defense solutions provider. In the global naval market, companies with strong design capabilities often hold a competitive advantage, making this collaboration particularly significant.

The partnership also draws attention due to Gibbs & Cox’s previous role in supporting European shipbuilder Fincantieri’s successful entry into the U.S. market. Observers suggest that a similar collaboration could help Hanwha Ocean navigate the complexities of U.S. defense procurement and establish a sustainable presence.

An industry official noted that entering the U.S. defense market requires not only technological capability but also a deep understanding of local standards and networks, adding that the partnership could significantly lower entry barriers for Hanwha Ocean.

At SAS 2026, Hanwha Ocean also showcased its advanced naval platforms, including the Ulsan-class Batch III frigate, the Dosan Ahn Changho-class submarine (Jangbogo-III), unmanned surface vessels (MUSV), extra-large unmanned underwater vehicles (XLUUV), and global fast sealift concepts. The company was the only Korean firm to operate a large-scale standalone exhibition booth, underscoring its ambition to expand its global defense footprint.

The collaboration is widely interpreted as part of Hanwha Ocean’s broader strategy to strengthen its platform competitiveness by integrating design, construction, and operational capabilities. If the partnership leads to actual contract wins, it could enhance not only the company’s global standing but also the competitiveness of South Korea’s broader shipbuilding and defense industries.
