“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has set a new box office benchmark for CJ 4DPLEX’s premium cinema formats, generating more than $104 million globally across SCREENX and 4DX.

The milestone was reached just 33 days after the film’s release, surpassing the previous record of $103 million generated by “Avatar: The Way of Water” over a 228-day theatrical run.

The latest result highlights the growing demand for immersive theatrical formats as studios and exhibitors look for ways to create experiences that cannot be replicated through conventional home viewing.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has been screened more than 115,000 times across approximately 1,200 SCREENX and 4DX locations worldwide, attracting more than 6.7 million admissions. The formats recorded an average occupancy rate of around 40%.

SCREENX also posted its strongest-ever opening performance in 36 countries, while 4DX achieved record opening results in 22 markets.

The film is also significant for CJ 4DPLEX because it marks the first Hollywood major-studio production to participate in the company’s “Shot for SCREENX” initiative.

Unlike the traditional process, in which completed films are later adapted for SCREENX, “Shot for SCREENX” brings the format into the filmmaking process from the beginning. Directors and production teams work with CJ 4DPLEX during production to design sequences specifically with the panoramic SCREENX environment in mind.

The approach is intended to make greater use of the expanded field of view, particularly in large-scale action and visually complex sequences, while moving SCREENX beyond a post-production adaptation model.

Steven O’Dell, president of international marketing and distribution at Sony Pictures Entertainment, said the film had exceeded expectations with audiences worldwide, adding that the creative collaboration enabled through “Shot for SCREENX” helped elevate the theatrical experience.

Bang Joon-sik, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX, said the speed at which the film reached the new record was particularly significant.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” became the fastest title to surpass the previous benchmark across SCREENX and 4DX, reaching the milestone in just 33 days. Bang also highlighted the project as an important step in evolving how CJ 4DPLEX works with studios and filmmakers.

Don Savant, president of CJ 4DPLEX Americas, said the performance demonstrates the value premium formats can create for audiences, studios and theater operators.

The record comes as the theatrical industry continues to explore new ways to differentiate the cinema experience from streaming and home entertainment. Premium formats such as SCREENX and 4DX offer studios additional platforms for event-driven releases while giving theaters more tools to attract audiences.

CJ 4DPLEX, a subsidiary of CJ CGV, develops and operates premium cinema technologies including SCREENX and 4DX. Its network currently spans 75 countries, with approximately 480 SCREENX screens and 780 4DX screens worldwide.

With its expanding global footprint, the company is positioning its premium formats as both an additional distribution platform for studios and a differentiated theatrical experience for moviegoers.
