SK bioscience is extending its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy into its research infrastructure, as its Global R&PD Center in Songdo, Incheon secures a major international green building certification.

The facility has been awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), one of the most widely used global standards for evaluating building sustainability. The certification assesses factors including energy efficiency, water conservation, materials use, indoor environmental quality, and site sustainability.

The achievement is particularly notable given the nature of the biotech industry, where research and process development typically require high levels of energy consumption. SK bioscience incorporated energy-efficient systems, water-saving designs, and resource-conscious construction to reduce operational impact while maintaining research performance.

The company also focused on improving the working environment for researchers. Interior design elements aimed at enhancing air quality and workflow efficiency were integrated to support both productivity and employee well-being.

The Songdo Global R&PD Center serves as an integrated research hub, combining research and development (R&D), process development (PD), and quality analysis functions in a single location. By enabling the full cycle—from early-stage research to process optimization and technology transfer—within one facility, the center is designed to accelerate development timelines and optimize resource utilization.

SK bioscience has been steadily expanding its ESG footprint across operations. Following the LEED certification of its Andong manufacturing plant, L HOUSE, the company has now extended green building standards to its headquarters and research facilities, reinforcing a company-wide sustainability framework.

Industry observers note that applying environmental standards to research facilities, not just manufacturing sites, reflects a broader shift in how ESG principles are being embedded across corporate operations.

SK bioscience plans to continue integrating ESG considerations throughout its R&D processes, aiming to strengthen its competitiveness in the global biotech market while advancing sustainable growth.
