Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail) has joined forces with French railway companies to enhance maintenance technologies for railway electrical systems, aiming to improve safety and operational efficiency through artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven solutions.
Korail announced on April 23 that it signed a multilateral memorandum of understanding (MOU) at its headquarters in Daejeon with SYSTRA and MESEA. The agreement was accompanied by a technical exchange session attended by railway officials from both South Korea and France.
Under the agreement, the three parties will share technologies and information in the field of railway electrical facility maintenance while strengthening cooperation through mutual benchmarking. A key focus will be the joint development of a data-driven maintenance system that leverages AI to analyze equipment conditions and predict potential failures in advance.
During the technical exchange session, Korail presented its operational experience with condition-based maintenance (CBM) and predictive maintenance (PdM). These approaches use real-time equipment data to determine optimal inspection timing and proactively respond to early signs of malfunction.
The French partners also introduced their advanced practices. MESEA showcased systems that integrate railway facility data and analyze anomalies in real time, along with predictive technologies for infrastructure management. SYSTRA proposed expanding technical and workforce exchanges based on its extensive experience in global railway infrastructure projects.
Korail said the partnership is expected to enhance the reliability and safety of railway electrical systems while strengthening its foundation for expansion into the global rail market. The company sees AI- and data-driven maintenance systems as a critical factor shaping future competitiveness in the railway industry.
