SK AX announced on November 11th that it has successfully implemented an AX-based logistics automation system at a global automotive parts factory in North America. This achievement sets a new milestone in manufacturing AX innovation, minimizing logistics delays and maximizing operational efficiency on the production floor.
The project was initiated to stably manage the complex logistics flow resulting from the diversified orders of automakers and increased logistics volume between processes. SK AX established an integrated AX logistics system that automatically connects the entire production process, enhancing both stability and productivity of the factory.
To automate all logistics processes from the transport of semi-finished products to the shipment of finished goods, SK AX deployed Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and Autonomous Forklifts (AFRs). This created a “self-moving logistics ecosystem” throughout the factory.
The robots are equipped with SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) technology, enabling them to recognize their position and find the optimal path even in indoor environments where GPS signals cannot reach. Since the maps are formed based on fixed structures like walls, they operate stably even if the positions of shelves or materials change and share position information among robots to create a collision-free autonomous collaboration environment.
Beyond merely operating autonomous robots, the system integrates the AI-based Material Control System (MCS) and AMR Control System (ACS) to comprehensively control logistics flows throughout the factory. AI analyzes real-time data on production line status, inventory location, and robot movement to automatically allocate the most efficient logistics routes. It adjusts the logistics input and order immediately to minimize unnecessary waiting and process delays, even with significant fluctuations in production volume.
Notably, the integration of a specialized logistics information system architecture optimized for automotive parts factories is an advantage. Unlike general manufacturing systems, it is designed to match the actual automotive production processes including semi-finished product production, assembly, and shipment. The system provides intuitive oversight of equipment, AGV, and inventory status through a Graphical User Interface (GUI), and integrates both upper Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and lower ACS for comprehensive management from work orders to shipment.
This systematic connection has resulted in visible outcomes such as reduced logistics lead time, improved transportation accuracy, and enhanced labor efficiency, significantly improving production efficiency across the factory.
SK AX anticipates that this logistics automation will trigger a paradigm shift in factory operations and supply chain management beyond simple productivity improvements. As logistics data is completely digitally interconnected, real-time sharing of component locations, movement paths, and shipment timings is possible with headquarters and clients. This will minimize inventory, improve delivery prediction accuracy, optimize energy consumption, and contribute to carbon emission reduction and sustainable management.
Kwangsoo Kim, head of SK AX's Manufacturing Service Division, stated, “This project is a prime example of SK AX's logistics technology realized on site,” and added, “It will provide a practical solution to the labor shortages and cost burdens faced by large factories in the US.” He also emphasized plans to expand cooperation with global automotive parts manufacturers and automakers to spread AX-based manufacturing innovation worldwide.
