SK hynix announced that its latest LPDDR5X automotive DRAM has obtained ASIL-D (Automotive Safety Integrity Level D) certification, the highest functional safety grade under the ISO 26262 automotive functional safety standard. ASIL-D is applied to systems directly related to human safety and represents the most stringent level of functional safety requirements.

The certification was granted by TÜV SÜD following a comprehensive evaluation covering the entire development lifecycle, including product design, verification, validation, and quality management processes. Beyond product-level performance, the assessment also examined SK hynix’s development and quality systems in line with global automotive standards.

With this certification, SK hynix has formally demonstrated its technological competitiveness in the automotive memory market by meeting not only high-performance requirements but also stringent safety and reliability standards.

The ASIL-D-certified LPDDR5X automotive DRAM is designed for use in next-generation vehicle systems such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), autonomous driving platforms, and in-vehicle infotainment. Optimized for high performance and low power consumption, the memory enables stable processing of large volumes of data in software-defined vehicle (SDV) environments while minimizing the risk of system failures.

As vehicle electrification and autonomous driving accelerate, the proportion of electronic and electrical systems within vehicles continues to increase. As a result, functional safety has become a critical benchmark for automotive components, moving beyond traditional metrics such as performance and defect rates. In SDV architectures in particular, memory stability plays a key role in ensuring overall system reliability and passenger safety.

ISO 26262, established by the International Organization for Standardization, defines safety requirements to prevent accidents caused by failures in automotive electrical and electronic systems. Its ASIL classification combines severity, exposure, and controllability to determine risk levels, with ASIL-D representing the most demanding requirements typically applied to autonomous driving control systems.

In response to these industry demands, SK hynix incorporated functional safety mechanisms into the LPDDR5X automotive DRAM from the design stage. The product is engineered to maintain data reliability under extreme temperature and voltage conditions, and includes features such as fault detection, failure notification, and self-diagnosis and repair capabilities. These safety mechanisms are balanced with ultra-high bandwidth and low-power characteristics required for automotive applications.

During the certification process, TÜV SÜD evaluated not only the functional safety performance of the LPDDR5X product, but also its safety architecture, error prevention, detection and diagnostic mechanisms, as well as SK hynix’s development, verification, and quality management systems. The assessment confirmed that the company’s processes meet global automotive industry requirements.

As global automakers increasingly require functional safety certification as a prerequisite for component adoption, SK hynix’s ASIL-D certification is expected to strengthen its position in the automotive memory market. The company plans to build on this achievement by expanding its portfolio of automotive memory solutions for autonomous driving and future mobility applications.
