LG Energy Solution is stepping up efforts to expand its presence in the North American energy storage system (ESS) market after being selected as a battery energy storage system (BESS) partner for NVIDIA’s DSX Ready program.

The partnership comes as the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure drives up electricity demand at data centers while creating greater fluctuations in power consumption. LG Energy Solution plans to leverage its battery technology and local production capabilities to address growing demand for power management solutions at AI data centers.

LG Energy Solution said on Sept. 22 that it has qualified as a BESS partner under NVIDIA’s DSX Ready program. Only three BESS companies worldwide were selected, making LG Energy Solution the only Korean battery manufacturer included in the program.

NVIDIA’s DSX platform is designed to integrate and optimize the design, construction and operation of AI factories, including computing, networking, power and cooling infrastructure. The DSX Ready program identifies products and solutions that meet the platform’s technical requirements.

LG Energy Solution qualified with its JF2 AC Link, an energy storage solution equipped with high-capacity lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The system features a modular design that allows capacity to be expanded as data center facilities grow.

The system also incorporates power conversion technology designed to respond to rapid changes in electricity demand. When AI servers experience sharp increases or decreases in power consumption, the battery can charge or discharge to help smooth the load.

The solution is also designed to respond to fluctuations in voltage and frequency. Its grid-forming capabilities can support power stability when electricity supply conditions become unstable, an increasingly important consideration as AI data centers operate with higher and more variable power loads.

LG Energy Solution is also expanding its manufacturing and systems integration capabilities in North America. The company operates multiple ESS production facilities in the region and plans to raise its North American ESS production capacity to more than 50GWh by the end of this year.

Its U.S.-based system integration operations provide services ranging from battery and system design to installation, operation and maintenance. This allows the company to offer data center customers a broader package rather than limiting its role to battery supply.

The rapid growth of AI data centers is emerging as a significant new source of demand for ESS. As high-performance AI servers require increasing amounts of electricity, data center operators are seeking technologies that can improve power stability while managing fluctuations in demand.

LG Energy Solution has already secured several major ESS projects in North America. In May, the company signed a 6GWh ESS battery supply agreement with U.S. utility DTE Energy. It also announced in July that it would supply batteries for a solar-plus-ESS project involving Google and Cypress Creek Energy.

The company expects its inclusion in NVIDIA’s DSX Ready ecosystem to create additional opportunities with global AI infrastructure customers. By combining its North American manufacturing base, ESS technology and system integration capabilities, LG Energy Solution aims to strengthen its position in the rapidly developing AI power infrastructure market.

LG Electronics also joined NVIDIA’s DSX Ready ecosystem on the same day with its large-capacity cooling water distribution unit technology, expanding the LG group’s presence across key AI data center infrastructure segments.

Industry observers are increasingly focusing on the power requirements surrounding AI data centers, as competition in the sector extends beyond semiconductors and servers to electricity supply, cooling and energy storage. Against this backdrop, ESS is expected to play a growing role in maintaining stable power supplies and managing the increasingly dynamic electricity demand of AI infrastructure.

Kang Chang-beom, executive vice president of LG Energy Solution’s ESS Battery Division, said the company’s inclusion in NVIDIA’s DSX Ready program demonstrates the competitiveness of its products designed for AI data centers.

He added that LG Energy Solution will continue strengthening its local production capabilities and technology leadership to expand its business opportunities in AI infrastructure.
