Samsung E&A is stepping up its push into the LNG liquefaction plant market, unveiling a new modular package designed to shorten project timelines and reduce construction risks.

The company introduced its LNG Module Package at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok on Sept. 16. The solution combines pre-engineered LNG liquefaction processes with modular construction technology, with a particular focus on small- and mid-scale LNG projects.

The package is based on Honeywell Technologies’ AP-SMR™ liquefaction technology, which uses a single mixed refrigerant process, combined with Samsung E&A’s experience in modular engineering and construction.

Unlike conventional plant construction, in which a significant portion of equipment fabrication and installation takes place on site, modular construction allows major components to be manufactured in advance at a factory or fabrication yard before being transported and assembled at the project site.

Samsung E&A expects the approach to reduce the overall project schedule by about 20%, from the early development phase through engineering, procurement and construction.

The company is also positioning the package as a tool for winning projects at an earlier stage. By offering pre-engineered technical specifications and a clearer project framework during the initial development phase, Samsung E&A aims to help customers assess projects more quickly and establish a foothold before EPC contracts are awarded.

Industry observers say the strategy reflects a broader shift toward modularization in LNG infrastructure, particularly as developers seek to control construction costs, shorten schedules and minimize exposure to on-site labor and logistical risks.

The approach could be particularly relevant to small- and mid-scale LNG developments, where shorter construction periods and standardized solutions can have a greater impact on overall project economics.

However, LNG projects remain sensitive to factors including gas prices, financing costs, regulatory requirements and the pace of the global energy transition. The ability to adapt standardized modular solutions to individual project conditions will therefore remain an important factor in determining their commercial competitiveness.

Samsung E&A has been strengthening its LNG business as part of a broader restructuring of its portfolio. Earlier this year, the company reorganized its business around three areas—chemicals, advanced industries and New Energy—with LNG identified as one of the key growth areas within New Energy alongside clean energy and water-related businesses.

The company has since expanded its LNG project track record, securing front-end engineering design work for an eco-friendly LNG plant in Indonesia as well as a conceptual design project in North America.

The latest modular package represents a further step in that strategy, allowing Samsung E&A to move beyond individual engineering projects and pursue a more standardized approach to LNG plant development and construction.

For Samsung E&A, the ultimate goal is to establish a position earlier in the project lifecycle and convert that early-stage engagement into EPC opportunities.

“By combining proven process technology from a technology partner with our modular execution capabilities, we have focused on shortening project schedules and reducing execution uncertainty,” a Samsung E&A spokesperson said. “We will actively respond to growing demand for modular LNG plants and strengthen collaboration with customers from the early stages of project development.”

As global demand for LNG infrastructure continues to evolve alongside energy security concerns and rising electricity demand, Samsung E&A’s ability to turn modular technology into commercially competitive project packages will be a key factor in determining how far its LNG business can expand.
