KB Kookmin Bank has strengthened its presence in the U.S. energy infrastructure market by successfully completing financing for the Delfin Floating LNG Project, a large-scale offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) development in the United States.
The transaction was structured as a syndicated financing package totaling approximately $2.67 billion, with KB Kookmin Bank serving as the only Korean financial institution acting as a lead arranger. The bank directly arranged and invested approximately $160 million in the project.
The Delfin project is an offshore LNG production and export development located in the Gulf of Mexico. It has attracted significant industry attention as the first commercial floating LNG (FLNG) facility in the United States. The project will liquefy natural gas offshore for export, a model that is expected to reduce development timelines and improve capital efficiency compared with traditional onshore LNG terminals.
As global demand for energy continues to rise and governments place greater emphasis on energy security, the project is viewed as a key component of efforts to strengthen U.S. natural gas export capacity. The Gulf of Mexico, home to extensive gas production and transportation infrastructure, is considered a strategic hub in the expansion of LNG supply chains.
South Korea’s industrial sector is also playing a critical role in the development. Samsung Heavy Industries secured a contract from project operator Delfin Midstream to construct the floating LNG facility, bringing Korean shipbuilding expertise into one of the most significant energy infrastructure projects currently underway.
Industry observers regard the transaction as a notable example of overseas infrastructure cooperation involving both Korea’s financial and industrial sectors. By combining Korean corporate participation with financing support from a domestic financial institution, the project demonstrates a new model for economic collaboration between South Korea and the United States in strategic industries.
KB Kookmin Bank has been expanding its overseas investment banking and project finance activities through the enhancement of its global network and specialized workforce. The bank says its accumulated expertise in international project evaluation and financing contributed to its role in securing and arranging the deal.
A bank official described the financing as “a symbolic international project connecting the energy and shipbuilding industries,” adding that KB Kookmin Bank plans to further strengthen cooperation with global financial institutions while supporting Korean companies seeking opportunities in overseas markets.
