LS Eco Energy is accelerating efforts to establish a non-Chinese rare earth supply chain through a strategic cross-investment agreement with Australian rare earth producer Lynas Rare Earths.

According to industry sources on July 27, LS Eco Energy and Lynas have signed an agreement to acquire each other's KRW 30 billion convertible bonds (CBs). The reciprocal investment goes beyond a financial transaction, reflecting the two companies' commitment to strengthening their long-term partnership and jointly expanding their rare earth businesses.

The investment follows a rare earth cooperation agreement signed in March. While the earlier partnership focused primarily on raw material supply and business collaboration, the latest deal deepens the relationship by aligning the companies' long-term strategic interests through mutual investment.

Lynas is widely recognized as the world's leading producer of rare earth materials outside China and one of the few companies capable of commercial-scale rare earth production. Through the partnership, LS Eco Energy expects to secure a stable supply of critical raw materials required for rare earth metal production.

The agreement comes as governments and manufacturers increasingly seek to diversify rare earth supply chains following tighter Chinese export controls. The United States, Europe, and other major economies have been actively pursuing alternative sources of rare earth materials, recognizing supply security as a strategic priority despite potentially higher procurement costs.

LS Eco Energy plans to begin production of samarium (Sm) metal, which is widely used in the defense industry, before expanding into other high-value rare earth metals, including dysprosium (Dy), terbium (Tb), and neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr).

Samarium is a key material used in samarium-cobalt (SmCo) permanent magnets, which are essential components in advanced defense systems such as fighter aircraft, missiles, and radar equipment.

The two companies aim to establish a fully integrated non-Chinese rare earth value chain by combining Lynas' rare earth raw material supply, LS Eco Energy's metal refining capabilities, and LS Cable & System's permanent magnet manufacturing expertise.

The partnership is expected to enhance the group's competitiveness in the global rare earth market while improving supply chain resilience for strategically important materials.

"This reciprocal investment is a strategic decision that reflects both companies' commitment to achieving long-term growth together in the rare earth business," said Lee Sang-ho, CEO of LS Eco Energy.
