Samsung Heavy Industries has secured a contract to build two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers for an Oceania-based shipping company, further strengthening its order backlog.
The deal, valued at approximately KRW 770.1 billion (around $580 million), follows a separate order for one LNG carrier signed on March 20. With the latest agreement, the shipbuilder has secured a total of three vessels within just three days, bringing the combined contract value to about KRW 1.15 trillion.
With this contract, Samsung Heavy Industries’ cumulative orders for the year have reached 14 vessels worth $2.9 billion. This represents about 21% of its annual order target of $13.9 billion. The company’s order portfolio includes six LNG carriers, two ethane carriers, two container ships, and four crude oil tankers.
The company highlighted that global demand for LNG carriers continues to remain strong. “Despite changes in the global geopolitical environment, major shipping companies continue to place steady orders for LNG carriers,” a Samsung Heavy Industries official said. “We will maintain a selective order strategy focused on high-value-added vessels such as eco-friendly ships and floating LNG (FLNG) facilities, leveraging our technological competitiveness across the entire LNG value chain.”
