SK Hynix announced on November 5th that it has obtained “Carbon Reducing” and “Carbon Footprint” certifications from the renowned international environmental organization, Carbon Trust, for a total of 15 memory products, including High Bandwidth Memory (HBM).
Founded in 2001 by the UK government, Carbon Trust is a non-profit organization specializing in eco-friendly certifications. It scientifically measures carbon emissions throughout a product’s entire lifecycle—from raw material sourcing, manufacturing, to distribution—and awards certifications based on international standards.
The “Carbon Reducing” certification recognizes products that have demonstrated tangible greenhouse gas reductions compared to previous year’s models, after rigorous validation. Meanwhile, the “Carbon Footprint” certification quantifies and publicly discloses the greenhouse gas emissions produced throughout the product’s lifecycle.
SK Hynix’s HBM products that received the “Carbon Reducing” certification include four models: 16GB HBM2E (8-stack), 16GB HBM3 (8-stack), 24GB HBM3E (8-stack), and 36GB HBM3E (12-stack). Notably, SK Hynix is the only company to have received such certification for both the 4th generation (HBM3) and 5th generation (HBM3E) HBM products.
In addition, seven DRAM products—two LPDDR5, two GDDR6, and three DDR5 DIMMs—also earned the “Carbon Reducing” certification. Four NAND and storage products—one NAND, two eSSD, and one cSSD—obtained the “Carbon Footprint” certification.
Of particular significance, 11 products—including HBM and DRAM—are recognized for their substantial reductions in actual carbon emissions compared to previous models, thereby validating both their technological excellence and environmental leadership.
SK Hynix has been steadily expanding its green certifications; last year, it received “Carbon Reducing” certifications for six products (LPDDR5, DDR5, cSSD) and “Carbon Footprint” certifications for NAND, UFS, and eSSD products, demonstrating ongoing commitment to sustainability.
Lee Byung-ki, Vice President of manufacturing technology at SK Hynix, stated, “Based on our six core action principles, we are expanding our global eco-friendly certifications to realize a sustainable future. We aim to minimize greenhouse gas emissions across all stages of product manufacturing and enhance our competitiveness with environmentally conscious innovation to maximize customer satisfaction.”
