Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has successfully completed the delivery of six additional T-50i advanced trainer aircraft to the Indonesian Air Force, further strengthening its position in the Southeast Asian defense market while deepening long-standing defense cooperation between the two countries.
KAI announced on July 16 that it had completed the final delivery and acceptance process for the six T-50i aircraft ordered by the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU).
The project stems from a contract signed in July 2021. Deliveries began in February this year, with the final aircraft handed over at the end of June. The program was officially concluded after the Indonesian Air Force issued the final acceptance certificate on July 16.
Indonesia was the first overseas customer for the T-50 family. After purchasing 16 T-50i aircraft in 2011 for advanced pilot training, light attack, and special mission operations, the country has now expanded its fleet to a total of 22 aircraft.
An Indonesian Air Force official said the newly delivered aircraft are expected to significantly enhance squadron operational capabilities and improve tactical training for pilots, contributing to stronger air defense readiness.
A KAI official said the successful completion of the project reflects both the company's aircraft development and manufacturing capabilities and the strong trust built with its customer.
"KAI will continue providing reliable logistics and technical support to maximize customer satisfaction and ensure stable aircraft operations," the official said.
The latest delivery is expected to further strengthen strategic defense cooperation between South Korea and Indonesia.
Indonesia is not only the first overseas operator of both the KT-1 basic trainer and the T-50 advanced trainer, but also a key partner in the joint development of the KF-21 fighter jet. Through the ongoing IF-X program, Indonesia is widely expected to become the first overseas operator of the KF-21.
Industry observers say Indonesia's adoption of the KF-21 would serve as a significant reference for future exports to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and other global markets by demonstrating the aircraft's operational credibility.
KAI has steadily expanded its presence in Southeast Asia, where the T-50 platform has earned strong recognition for its performance and operational reliability.
Existing operators, including Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, have continued placing follow-on orders after expressing high satisfaction with the aircraft. The company has also expanded its business beyond aircraft sales by securing Performance Based Logistics (PBL) contracts in the Philippines, providing comprehensive maintenance and sustainment services.
Meanwhile, KAI is preparing to begin deliveries of 18 FA-50 light combat aircraft ordered by Malaysia under a 2023 contract, with shipments scheduled to commence in the second half of this year.
Industry analysts believe the successful completion of the Indonesian program will enhance KAI's credibility in the global defense market by demonstrating its ability to execute large-scale export contracts on schedule. The achievement is also expected to improve the company's prospects for additional aircraft sales, long-term maintenance contracts, and future exports of the KF-21 fighter program.
