Acclaimed for an advanced legal philosophy paper examining the limits of familial mitigation in criminal sentencing

[VANCOUVER, BC] — Fred Lee, an exceptional 11th-grade student at Pattison High School in Vancouver, has achieved a world-class academic milestone by being shortlisted for the 2026 John Locke Institute Global Essay Prize in the Law Category.

The John Locke Institute Global Essay Competition is widely recognized as one of the most prestigious and rigorous academic writing contests for high school students worldwide. This year, the competition witnessed an unprecedented level of global participation, welcoming 100,227 contestants from 183 countries. Following a meticulous evaluation process by senior faculty members from the University of Oxford and Princeton University, the shortlist was drawn strictly from the top 17.5 percent of all eligible entries. Fred’s selection marks a remarkable feat of intellectual depth and analytical writing.

Fred’s shortlisted essay, titled “The Limits of Compassion in Sentencing,” confronts a highly polarized debate in contemporary criminal jurisprudence: whether a defendant’s family circumstances or dependents should justify a mitigated criminal sentence.

In his paper, Fred constructs a compelling legal philosophy argument, asserting that tailoring criminal punishments based on a perpetrator’s family structure fundamentally compromises the rule of law. He argues that adjusting sentences based on who is waiting at home violates the core democratic promise of “equal treatment for equal crimes” and inadvertently penalizes individuals who lack conventional familial support. Citing landmark judicial precedents and scholarly publications from the Stanford Journal of Criminal Law and Policy, Fred systematically demonstrates that while the collateral suffering of innocent children is undeniable, it should be addressed through dedicated state social welfare programs rather than by compromising justice for the victim’s family.

As a shortlisted candidate, Fred has been cordially invited to attend the invitation-only Academic Conference and Gala Ceremony on Saturday, 3 October 2026, at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel in Mayfair, London. This exclusive black-tie event will bring together young scholars and leading academics from across the globe to engage in intellectual discourse and announce the grand prize winners in each category.

“Reflecting deeply on judicial fairness and exploring how the legal system balances equity with compassion has been incredibly rewarding,” said Fred Lee. “To have my perspective recognized by world-renowned academics is an immense honor. I look forward to traveling to London this October to engage with peers and scholars who share a profound passion for jurisprudence.”
