LG Energy Solution and Honda are partnering with Hanoi authorities to develop battery swapping infrastructure for electric motorcycles, positioning Vietnam as a key growth market for next-generation urban mobility in Southeast Asia.
While growth in the global electric vehicle market has recently slowed, industry analysts say the electric two-wheeler sector continues to expand rapidly, particularly in Southeast Asia where motorcycles remain the dominant mode of transportation.
LG Energy Solution announced on May 19 that the companies will jointly develop a comprehensive battery swapping ecosystem that includes battery supply, operational platforms, station infrastructure, and battery safety management systems.
The project is designed to eliminate charging wait times for electric motorcycle users. Instead of recharging depleted batteries, riders will be able to replace them with fully charged battery packs at dedicated swap stations within minutes.
Industry experts view battery swapping as one of the most practical solutions for accelerating electric motorcycle adoption in densely populated Asian cities, where limited parking space and charging infrastructure remain major challenges.
Starting in the third quarter, around 50 battery swapping stations will be installed across key districts in Hanoi. Pilot operations involving hundreds of electric motorcycles are also scheduled to begin as part of a real-world demonstration program aimed at collecting operational and consumer usage data.
LG Energy Solution will oversee battery supply, digital platform operations, and safety management technologies. The company also plans to deploy systems capable of monitoring battery conditions and lifecycle performance in real time to improve operational stability and safety.
Honda will supply electric motorcycles, swappable battery packs, and exchange equipment. Given Honda’s dominant share of Vietnam’s motorcycle market, the partnership is expected to benefit from the company’s extensive local customer base and dealer network.
The Hanoi initiative is attracting attention because the city is considered one of the world’s largest motorcycle-centered urban markets. Millions of motorcycles currently operate throughout the city, making traffic congestion and air pollution major public policy concerns.
Vietnamese authorities have recently accelerated efforts to reduce emissions by gradually tightening restrictions on internal combustion engine motorcycles while promoting environmentally friendly transportation alternatives.
Industry analysts believe the project could evolve into a large-scale testbed for battery swapping infrastructure across Southeast Asia. Vietnam remains one of the world’s largest motorcycle markets, but electric two-wheeler adoption is still at an early stage, leaving substantial room for growth.
Battery industry observers say electric motorcycles could become one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing mobility sectors over the next several years. Battery swapping systems are increasingly viewed as a key catalyst because they lower infrastructure costs while significantly improving convenience for consumers.
For LG Energy Solution, the initiative also reflects a broader strategy to expand beyond battery manufacturing into a full-scale energy platform business. The company is expected to leverage operational data from the Vietnam project to support future expansion into additional countries and mobility services.
