KAI Expands Partnership with GE Avio to Advance Rotorcraft Technologies and Global Aerospace Market Access
Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) is strengthening its strategic partnership with Italy-based aerospace propulsion and transmission specialist GE Avio, accelerating efforts to expand into the global aerospace components market while enhancing South Korea’s technological capabilities in advanced rotorcraft systems.
KAI announced on June 11 (local time) that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with GE Avio at the company's headquarters in Turin, Italy, to jointly conduct research on rotorcraft power transmission systems. The signing ceremony was attended by KAI President Kim Jong-chul and Vito Alfarano, Chief Operating Officer of GE Avio, along with senior executives from both companies.
The agreement focuses on advancing technologies related to rotorcraft power transmission systems, one of the most critical components in helicopter operations. Through joint research and development initiatives, as well as collaborative marketing activities, the two companies aim to identify new international customers and pursue entry into the global aerospace supply chain based on internationally recognized certification standards.
Industry observers view the partnership as a significant step toward improving South Korea’s aerospace technological independence. Power transmission systems play a vital role in transferring engine power to helicopter rotors and require exceptionally high levels of engineering expertise and reliability. Historically, many key technologies and components in this sector have relied heavily on overseas suppliers.
By expanding domestic capabilities in this area, KAI is expected to strengthen supply chain resilience while enhancing maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) competitiveness for both military and civilian rotorcraft platforms.
The collaboration will also extend beyond traditional helicopter systems. KAI and GE Avio plan to cooperate in the development of small and medium-sized aircraft engine technologies, as well as hybrid propulsion systems designed for next-generation unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and future aviation platforms. To support these initiatives, the companies will establish a Joint Working Group (JWG) and maintain regular technical exchanges.
The aerospace industry also expects the partnership to create new opportunities for participation in European research and development programs. KAI and GE Avio are considering joint participation in European Union-funded aerospace projects aimed at securing next-generation aviation technologies and expanding international collaboration.
The agreement aligns closely with KAI’s broader strategy to localize critical rotorcraft technologies. In April, the company successfully completed domestic assembly and testing of the Surion helicopter’s Main Gearbox (MGB), marking a significant milestone in its efforts to secure indigenous capabilities in key rotorcraft systems.
KAI plans to further develop these technologies to improve the performance of the Surion helicopter, support future export-oriented platforms, and expand military sustainment and logistics support programs.
“This cooperation represents an important turning point in enhancing Korea’s rotorcraft technology capabilities and expanding our global partnership network,” said Kim Jong-chul, President of KAI. “By securing core technologies and pursuing international joint development projects, we will create new growth opportunities in the global aerospace components market.”
Vito Alfarano, Chief Operating Officer of GE Avio, expressed similar optimism, stating that the combination of the two companies’ expertise and experience could lead to innovative achievements that help shape the future of the aerospace industry.
As global aerospace and defense markets place increasing emphasis on supply chain security and technological sovereignty, industry analysts believe the KAI–GE Avio partnership could not only strengthen South Korea’s aerospace component sector but also create new export opportunities for domestic suppliers and partner companies.
