SK bioscience has maintained an “A” rating for three consecutive years in the MSCI ESG assessment, signaling consistent performance in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices amid tightening global evaluation standards.
The company announced on April 1 that it received an “A” rating in the latest ESG evaluation by MSCI, a leading global index provider that assesses publicly listed companies worldwide on ESG risk management. MSCI assigns ratings on a seven-point scale ranging from AAA to CCC.
The result comes as ESG assessments become increasingly data-driven and focused on measurable outcomes. With the growing use of AI and external datasets, evaluation criteria have become more stringent, leading to rating fluctuations among some companies. Against this backdrop, SK bioscience’s ability to maintain its rating highlights relative stability in its ESG performance.
The pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector is generally subject to more rigorous ESG standards due to factors such as access to medicines, talent development, and ethical management. Maintaining a high rating in this environment underscores the company’s positioning within the industry.
In the environmental category, MSCI highlighted SK bioscience’s environmental management systems and climate response efforts. The company maintains ISO 14001 certification and conducts annual compliance reviews related to air quality, water management, waste, and chemical handling. It has also established a mid- to long-term roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including expanding renewable energy use and transitioning to hydrogen-based boiler systems.
On the social front, contributions to public health and human capital development were key factors. SK bioscience collaborates with global organizations such as the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support global health initiatives. The company is also expanding vaccine supply through its “SkyVax” portfolio, which includes influenza, varicella, and shingles vaccines.
In particular, SK bioscience has been broadening its global supply network by participating in procurement programs led by international organizations such as UNICEF and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), focusing on vaccines that have passed the World Health Organization’s prequalification (PQ) process.
The company’s efforts in workforce development have also been recognized, including tailored training programs and competency development initiatives. Governance practices were evaluated positively as well, with emphasis on ethical management systems and board oversight. SK bioscience has strengthened its governance framework by enhancing board supervision, providing ethics training for employees, and improving diversity through the appointment of qualified female directors.
In addition to its global recognition, SK bioscience has demonstrated consistent ESG performance domestically. The company has received an overall “A” rating for four consecutive years in assessments conducted by the Korea Institute of Corporate Governance and Sustainability (KCGS), reinforcing its standing in both global and local ESG benchmarks.
