Biosolution Co., Ltd. has secured a landmark regulatory milestone in China with its cell therapy CartiLife, becoming the first Korean-developed cell therapy to receive commercial sales approval in the country.

The company announced on April 28 that CartiLife, an autologous costal cartilage-based treatment for knee cartilage defects, has officially entered the Chinese market—widely regarded as the world’s largest for knee osteoarthritis. The approval underscores the growing global competitiveness of South Korea’s biotechnology sector.

CartiLife is designed to regenerate damaged knee cartilage using cells cultured from a patient’s own rib cartilage. By leveraging costal cartilage, which is typically less affected by degeneration and offers strong regenerative potential, the therapy aims to deliver improved clinical outcomes compared to conventional approaches that rely on joint cartilage.

The approval was granted by the Hainan Provincial Medical Products Administration, which confirmed that the therapy’s proprietary technology and manufacturing standards could be reliably implemented at local facilities. The company utilized Hainan’s “pioneering application policy for new technologies,” allowing it to bypass the conventional approval process under National Medical Products Administration, which can take more than a decade.

China is estimated to have approximately 110 million patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis, making it a key target for high-value therapies. Biosolution plans to adopt a premium pricing strategy focused on severe cases, with the total procedure cost set at around 200,000 RMB (approximately $27,500) per patient. Of this, about 150,000 RMB is attributed to the drug itself, forming a high-margin revenue structure.

The company has also outlined an integrated treatment and logistics model. Patient tissue will be collected at partner hospitals in major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, then transported to a GMP-certified facility in Hainan for processing. Patients will subsequently travel to Hainan for the procedure, aligning treatment delivery with the region’s growing medical tourism infrastructure.

Biosolution’s market entry strategy relies on a policy-driven, top-down approach. Instead of relying on individual physician adoption, the company plans to introduce the therapy through designated hospitals under government support and expand its presence across mainland China. Initial efforts will focus on building clinical data and brand recognition at major institutions, including top-tier “Grade 3” hospitals.

Looking ahead, the company aims to scale rapidly. Biosolution plans to perform approximately 1,000 procedures annually in China by 2027, increasing to 5,000 within three years. The firm expects that clinical data generated under Chinese regulatory oversight will strengthen its position in future approvals, including potential submissions to the U.S. FDA and expansion into Middle Eastern markets.

The approval is also expected to enhance the global licensing value of Biosolution’s pipeline products, including Cartiroid and Spherocure. The company said the milestone represents a transition from a research-focused biotech firm to a revenue-driven growth company targeting the multi-trillion-won Chinese healthcare market.
