Daewoong Pharmaceutical is accelerating its global expansion strategy after its homegrown diabetes treatment Enblo received regulatory approval in Mexico, one of Latin America’s largest pharmaceutical markets.

The company announced on May 27 that Mexico’s health authorities approved Enblo for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, marking another milestone in Daewoong’s broader effort to position the drug as a global metabolic disease therapy.

Industry observers say the approval carries significance beyond a single-country authorization, as it signals that Daewoong’s overseas commercialization strategy for Enblo is entering a more tangible growth phase.

The company is currently pursuing regulatory approvals in 12 major Latin American countries and has now secured sales approvals in seven markets, including Mexico.

Daewoong Pharmaceutical is partnering with regional pharmaceutical distribution specialist Arcela to expand its presence throughout Latin America. The two companies have signed supply agreements covering key markets including Brazil and Mexico, with commercial launches expected to proceed sequentially according to local approval schedules.

Analysts say Latin America is emerging as a major growth region for diabetes therapies due to rapid urbanization, increasingly Westernized diets, and rising obesity rates across the region.

Mexico, in particular, is considered one of the countries with a high prevalence of adult diabetes, driving sustained demand for advanced glucose-lowering treatments.

Enblo is a domestically developed SGLT-2 inhibitor designed to control blood sugar by preventing glucose reabsorption in the kidneys and promoting glucose excretion through urine.

The global diabetes treatment market has recently seen increasing demand for SGLT-2 therapies not only for glucose management but also for their potential cardiovascular and renal protective benefits.

Daewoong Pharmaceutical says Enblo’s competitiveness lies in its ability to deliver strong efficacy at relatively lower doses compared with some existing therapies in the same class. The company also highlighted positive clinical findings related to weight reduction and blood pressure management.

In addition, studies involving diabetic patients with impaired kidney function reportedly showed improvements not only in glycemic control but also in metabolic and renal-related indicators, potentially broadening the drug’s future therapeutic applications.

The company plans to use the Mexico approval as a springboard for broader commercialization across Latin America while accelerating regulatory procedures in additional countries.

Industry analysts note that Korean pharmaceutical companies are increasingly seeking overseas growth opportunities through proprietary drug development rather than traditional generic-focused exports.

“With global demand for metabolic disease treatments continuing to rise, the competitiveness of Korean-developed innovative drugs is becoming more important in international markets,” one pharmaceutical industry official said.

Daewoong Pharmaceutical aims to expand Enblo beyond the domestic market and position it as a global blockbuster treatment in the growing diabetes and metabolic disease sector.
