The US maintained stable VC deal activity while recording a sharp surge in funding value during January–April 2026. Although China posted strong growth, global capital concentration remained overwhelmingly centered in the US.

The US reinforced its lead in the global venture capital market during January-April 2026, as funding value surged despite only modest growth in deal activity.

According to GlobalData, the number of VC deals announced in the US rose 1% year-on-year during the period, while total funding value jumped 178%. The gap suggests that investors are not necessarily making many more bets, but are committing far larger sums to selected companies.

“The divergence between relatively flat deal count and soaring funding value suggests investors are increasingly prioritizing fewer, larger transactions,” said Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData. “This underscores a decisive shift toward larger ticket sizes and a more concentrated flow of capital into high-conviction opportunities.”

Several large transactions drove the increase. OpenAI secured $122 billion, Anthropic raised $30 billion, xAI attracted $20 billion, and Waymo raised $16 billion during the first four months of the year. The scale of these deals shows how AI, autonomous systems and platform-led technology companies are absorbing a growing share of global private capital.

GlobalData’s Financial Deals Database shows that the US accounted for 30% of global VC deal volume during January-April 2026, but 80% of total global VC funding value. That share was up from 72% in the same period of 2025, underscoring the continued concentration of capital in the US market.

China remained the second-largest VC market by activity. Its deal volume rose 60% year-on-year, while funding value increased 206%. Even so, China accounted for 24% of global VC deal volume but only 7% of global VC funding value, highlighting the gap between deal activity and capital scale.

Other major markets showed a similar pattern of fewer or stable deals but higher funding values. The UK recorded a 1.6% decline in deal volume, while funding value rose 114%. India saw deal volume fall 7%, even as funding value increased 22%.

“Looking ahead, the global VC market is likely to remain increasingly polarized, with capital concentrating around AI, deep tech, and scalable platform-led businesses,” Bose said. “The US appears well-positioned to sustain its leadership as investors continue favoring mature innovation ecosystems, strong commercialization pipelines, and startups capable of delivering long-term strategic growth.”

The data points to a more selective global VC market. Capital is still available, but it is flowing toward companies with large-scale infrastructure, defensible technology and the potential to shape future industrial platforms.

Note: Historical data may change if additional deals are added to previous months because of delayed public disclosure.
