Samsung Electronics and Samsung C&T announced on October 16 (local time) a joint investment of $110 million in U.S. biotech company Grail, the developer of advanced blood‑based technology for early cancer detection.

Grail’s platform analyzes fragments of DNA circulating in the blood to detect minute amounts of tumor‑derived DNA. Using AI‑driven genomic analysis, the company’s Galleri test can not only indicate the presence of cancer but also predict the tissue or organ of origin. The Galleri test, now commercialized, is designed to screen for more than 50 cancer types from a single blood draw.

Since its 2021 launch, Galleri has recorded over 400,000 cumulative tests and is being evaluated in large‑scale clinical trials in partnership with the U.K. National Health Service (NHS). Grail says the test has particular promise for cancers that are difficult to detect early—such as pancreatic and ovarian cancers—potentially reducing treatment burdens by enabling earlier intervention. The company plans to seek formal U.S. FDA approval for Galleri next year.

Under the investment agreement, Samsung C&T has secured exclusive distribution rights for Galleri in South Korea and plans to expand collaboration across Asia, including Singapore and Japan. Samsung Electronics intends to integrate Grail’s genomic diagnostics and data with its Samsung Health platform to deliver personalized healthcare services and bolster its digital health capabilities.

Park Heon‑soo, head of Samsung Electronics’ Digital Health team, described the move as “an important step toward realizing a vision of everyday health improvement through technology,” saying Grail’s clinical data and analytics will be applied to offer more precise, personalized health management via Samsung Health.

Harpal Kumar, Grail’s president of global operations, said the partnership will accelerate the rollout of multi‑cancer early detection services across Asia, including Korea, and support Grail’s broader commercial goals such as wider insurance coverage for Galleri.

The investment follows previous Samsung group activity in life sciences and digital health. Samsung C&T has earlier invested through a life sciences fund alongside Samsung Biologics and Samsung Bioepis in U.S. firms including C2N, which develops Alzheimer’s blood tests. Samsung Electronics has also invested in U.S. sequencing‑related firm Element Biosciences and acquired digital health startup Xealth as part of its strategy to strengthen healthcare offerings.
