LS Eco Energy has launched a strategic investment initiative to strengthen its position in the global rare earth supply chain, partnering with Lynas Rare Earths, the world’s second-largest producer of rare earth materials.
The company announced on March 26 that both firms agreed to a mutual investment by exchanging convertible bonds worth 30 billion won each. The deal establishes a strategic partnership combining capital and technological capabilities to enhance supply chain collaboration.
In the rare earth industry, the most challenging segment to secure is the upstream “raw material” stage, which involves mining and refining. This segment is currently dominated by China, creating significant bottlenecks in global supply. Through this partnership, LS Eco Energy aims to establish a stable and long-term supply of rare earth raw materials.
Lynas is widely regarded as the leading non-Chinese supplier capable of large-scale production, making it a critical alternative in the global market. The collaboration is expected to play a key role in diversifying resource dependency and improving supply chain resilience.
Rare earth elements are essential materials across advanced industries, including electric vehicles, robotics, and defense. The sector features a complex value chain that spans mining, metal processing, and permanent magnet production. Due to its concentration in specific regions, securing a stable procurement system has become a growing priority worldwide.
Under the agreement, the two companies plan to gradually expand their cooperation beyond raw material supply to include metal production and downstream applications, strengthening their competitiveness in the global market.
CEO Lee Sang-ho of LS Eco Energy said, “This partnership goes beyond a simple investment and represents a strategic alliance. By combining our strengths, we aim to offer reliable alternatives to global customers.”
