SK hynix has reported record-breaking first-quarter results, driven by surging demand for AI-focused semiconductors. The performance, achieved despite what is typically a seasonal slowdown, is being seen as a sign that the memory industry is entering a new phase of structural growth.
According to regulatory filings released on March 23, the company posted revenue of 52.6 trillion won and operating profit of 37.6 trillion won for the first quarter. This represents year-on-year increases of 198.1% and 405.5%, respectively, with both figures reaching all-time quarterly highs. Compared to the previous quarter, revenue rose by more than 60%, while operating profit nearly doubled.
Profitability also improved sharply. The operating margin climbed to 71.5%, up more than 13 percentage points from the previous quarter, marking a new record. Analysts say this reflects not just a recovery in market conditions but a fundamental shift toward a higher-value product portfolio.
The results were largely driven by changes in product mix. Sales of high-value memory products—including high-bandwidth memory (HBM), high-capacity server DRAM, and enterprise SSDs—expanded rapidly, lifting overall margins. The company said continued investment in AI infrastructure has sustained strong demand even during the off-season, with improved product mix playing a key role in earnings growth.
Shifts in the AI market are also contributing to rising demand. As AI evolves from large-scale training systems to real-time, service-oriented applications such as AI agents, memory requirements are becoming broader and more diverse. At the same time, advancements in memory efficiency are helping reduce the cost of AI services, encouraging further market expansion and creating a virtuous cycle of demand growth.
The company’s financial position strengthened significantly as well. Cash and cash equivalents reached 54.3 trillion won at the end of the first quarter, up by more than 19 trillion won from the previous quarter. Meanwhile, borrowings declined, expanding the company’s net cash position and enhancing its capacity for future investments.
To meet growing demand, SK hynix plans to accelerate capacity expansion. Key initiatives include expanding its M15X facility in Cheongju, developing the Yongin semiconductor cluster, and securing extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment. The company said it aims to strategically build production capacity to respond proactively to structural demand growth in the AI era.
Market analysts view the latest earnings not as a cyclical rebound but as evidence of a broader transformation in the memory industry. Lee Seung-woo, head of research at Eugene Investment & Securities, noted that the expansion of AI services is creating sustained demand for memory, suggesting the industry may be entering a long-term growth phase.
Looking ahead, the pace of supply expansion and the sustainability of AI investment remain key variables. However, current trends indicate that the memory semiconductor sector is gradually shifting away from its traditional status as a cyclical industry toward a more stable, long-term growth market.
