Zagreb, Croatia – December 4, 2025 — Solana wallet provider Solflare has announced the release of Solflare Shield, a new hardware wallet that uses NFC technology and a battery-free form factor to enable tap-to-sign transaction authentication. The device stores private keys in a secure element chip certified to the EAL6+ standard, a level commonly used in high-assurance security products.
Solflare Shield is designed for mobile-first Solana users seeking a hardware-based self-custody option without relying on cables, Bluetooth connections, or an integrated battery. Users authenticate transactions by tapping the card to a smartphone, with PIN or biometric verification required for each signing process.
According to Solflare, Shield aims to align cold-storage security practices with more familiar user flows from software wallets. The company states that the NFC-enabled design is intended to reduce friction in everyday use while maintaining a hardware-isolated environment for private keys.
The product will be available in three variants:
-
Shield Origin: a basic model with a minimal design focused on standard self-custody needs.
-
Shield Signature: a version offering pre-designed or artist-created visual themes.
-
Shield Unique: a customizable option allowing users to upload their own artwork for the card surface.
Solflare’s co-founders, Vidor Gencel and Filip Dragoslavic, expressed that the release reflects the company’s effort to integrate hardware and software security practices while simplifying self-custody workflows.
Pre-orders for Solflare Shield begin today, priced between $49 and $79, with shipping scheduled to start on February 1, 2026. The company plans to offer limited-time discounts from December 3 to December 21, including a Shield Origin two-pack at $49 and a discounted Shield Unique at $59.
