LG Uplus is accelerating its push into the future communications market by partnering with major Japanese telecom operators to advance collaboration in 6G and artificial intelligence (AI).
The company announced that it signed the “Tokyo Accord” alongside NTT Docomo, KDDI, Rakuten, and SoftBank at the GSMA APAC CEO and 6G Alliance Summit held in Tokyo on April 14.
The agreement goes beyond simple technology exchange, establishing a comprehensive cooperation framework aimed at preparing for a next-generation communications environment where 6G and AI are deeply integrated. The partnership will span a wide range of initiatives, from standardization efforts to the development of new business models.
The Tokyo Accord outlines a shared vision for next-generation networks that support a sustainable digital society and global economic growth. Participating companies emphasized the need for interoperable large-scale platforms built on 6G infrastructure to support the rapid expansion of AI technologies. Key principles include fostering an open digital ecosystem, accelerating digital transformation across industries, and building a trusted global digital environment.
During the summit, LG Uplus shared its vision for 6G technologies and AI-driven network strategies with Japanese counterparts, while also identifying concrete areas for joint initiatives. The companies reached a consensus on the importance of collaboration in core areas such as AI-centric network architecture, edge computing, and digital trust.
Telecom operators across the Asia-Pacific region also agreed to cooperate in building open and interoperable networks, promoting cross-industry digital transformation, strengthening security and trust frameworks, and developing sustainable business models.
LG Uplus expects the agreement to further strengthen cooperation between Korean and Japanese telecom companies. The company plans to take a leading role in 6G and AI standardization while developing competitive business models for the global market.
Lee Sang-yeob, CTO of LG Uplus, said the partnership will help deepen ties with Japanese telecom operators and prepare jointly for the upcoming era of AI-powered 6G networks. He added that the collaboration will also serve as an opportunity to expand the company’s AI strategy globally while learning from Japan’s innovation cases.
