As financial institutions race to enhance customer experience through artificial intelligence (AI), KB Kookmin Card has introduced a next-generation customer service platform powered by generative AI, marking another step in the digital transformation of Korea’s financial sector.
Industry sources said on June 10 that KB Kookmin Card recently completed the deployment of a hybrid customer support system that integrates generative AI technology with its existing rule-based chatbot platform.
The new system combines the operational stability and transaction-processing capabilities of traditional chatbots with the natural language understanding capabilities of generative AI. Given the importance of accuracy and security in financial services, the company focused on balancing AI flexibility with the reliability of established systems.
One of the most significant improvements is the system’s ability to understand customer intent even when inquiries contain typos, informal language, or non-standard sentence structures. Questions that previously required escalation to human agents can now be resolved automatically in many cases.
The platform also supports more complex interactions, including multiple questions submitted simultaneously and conversations that rely on contextual understanding across several exchanges. This enables customers to interact with the service in a more natural and conversational manner.
A key challenge in adopting generative AI within the financial industry is mitigating the risk of hallucinations—instances in which AI generates inaccurate or misleading information. To address this issue, KB Kookmin Card established a dedicated verification framework. When confidence levels are low, the system automatically falls back on standardized responses from existing knowledge bases.
Industry observers view the initiative as a potential turning point for AI-powered customer service in Korea’s financial sector.
Many banks and card issuers have operated chatbot services for years, but customer satisfaction has often been limited by their reliance on predefined scenarios and scripted responses. Generative AI, by contrast, can interpret user intent and maintain conversational context, significantly improving service quality.
“Adopting generative AI is rapidly becoming a necessity rather than an option,” said a digital innovation executive at a major commercial bank. “Financial customer service is evolving beyond basic FAQ functions toward personalized interactions that understand customer needs and provide tailored information.”
The broader impact could be substantial. Financial institutions expect generative AI to reduce customer service operating costs, shorten waiting times, and improve service quality. At the same time, repetitive inquiries can be handled by AI, allowing human advisors to focus on higher-value services such as wealth management and financial consulting.
KB Kookmin Card plans to expand the use of generative AI to its voice-based customer service platform, or call bot, in the future. The company is also developing an intelligent consultation system capable of analyzing inquiries in advance, predicting customer needs, and delivering more personalized services.
As generative AI adoption spreads across the financial industry, competition among banks, card companies, and insurers is expected to intensify.
“The next stage of competition will center on who can provide the most accurate, secure, and personalized customer experience,” an industry official said. “Generative AI is becoming a critical differentiator across the financial services landscape.”
