Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced that its smart home platform, SmartThings, now supports Matter 1.5, the latest version of the global smart home connectivity standard, becoming the first platform in the industry to enable support for Matter-compatible cameras.
Beginning later this month, Samsung will roll out SmartThings updates that expand its current lineup of Matter-enabled devices to include cameras. Until now, SmartThings has supported Matter-compatible lights, door locks, switches, and a variety of sensors. With the addition of cameras, SmartThings will offer the broadest Matter device support among smart home platforms.
“Samsung aims to ensure that products and services built on different brands and protocols deliver a unified experience through SmartThings,” said Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of the SmartThings Team at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue expanding support for industry standards such as Matter and strengthen collaboration across the ecosystem to deliver new and meaningful customer experiences.”
Matter 1.5, announced by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) in November, introduces official support for cameras along with enhanced functionality for closure devices such as blinds, awnings, and garage doors. The update also brings improvements in energy management, further strengthening Matter’s role as a comprehensive smart home standard.
The addition of camera support has drawn particular attention from the industry, as cameras are a core component of modern smart home environments. Matter 1.5 supports a wide range of camera applications, including indoor and outdoor security cameras and video doorbells. Key features include live video streaming, two-way communication, motion detection, event history tracking, and pan-tilt-zoom controls.
With SmartThings now supporting Matter-based cameras, manufacturers can launch products that integrate seamlessly with the platform without developing custom APIs. This reduces development complexity and accelerates time to market. Samsung has collaborated with global IoT device makers such as Aqara, Eve, and Ulticam to develop Matter-compatible cameras, with product rollouts expected to begin in March 2026.
SmartThings already works with a wide range of camera brands, including Aqara, Arlo, Hue, and Ring, across multiple connection protocols. The addition of Matter camera support further expands user choice and simplifies device integration within the SmartThings ecosystem.
By integrating cameras into SmartThings, users can create safer and more convenient smart homes tailored to their lifestyles. Core use cases include monitoring the home while away, checking on pets, and building customized routines by connecting cameras with smart doorbells and other devices.
Samsung continues to strengthen its leadership in the smart home market through an open-platform strategy and expanding global partnerships. Through its Works With SmartThings (WWST) certification program, SmartThings now supports more than 4,700 device models from over 390 partner brands. By rapidly adopting the Matter standard, Samsung has helped bring 58 Matter device types into everyday smart home use, further reinforcing SmartThings as a central hub for connected living.
