SK On is accelerating efforts to diversify its business portfolio by unveiling new products and next-generation battery technologies tailored to evolving global demand. Moving beyond its electric vehicle (EV)-focused structure, the company is expanding into energy storage systems (ESS), robotics and other emerging sectors.
The company announced it will participate in InterBattery 2026, South Korea’s largest battery industry exhibition, to be held from March 11 to 13 at COEX in Seoul. Under the slogan “Unlock the Next Energy,” SK On plans to showcase batteries applied across a wide range of industries along with future-oriented technologies.
ESS is positioned as a key growth driver for 2026. At the exhibition, SK On will introduce a high-energy-density lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pouch battery designed for ESS applications. As global demand for large-capacity cells increases, the product focuses on both cost efficiency and productivity. SK On aims to raise LFP battery energy density from the current 350–450Wh/L range to 500Wh/L by enhancing electrode density, optimizing internal space efficiency and refining electrode design. Material innovation and process improvements are also expected to strengthen lifecycle performance and output characteristics.
Safety technologies will also feature prominently. SK On plans to showcase a container-type ESS DC block incorporating an industry-first preventive and diagnostic system based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). By analyzing internal resistance and reaction characteristics using AC signals, EIS enables early detection of subtle defects and degradation stages that conventional battery management systems (BMS) may not identify. The system is designed to allow selective replacement of abnormal modules, improving maintenance efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
The company will also present battery applications in robotics. SK On’s high-nickel ternary batteries are installed in Hyundai Wia’s autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), which are deployed for logistics automation at industrial sites such as Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA). SK On is expanding collaboration across various robotic platforms, including mobile picking robots and parking robots.
Cell-to-Pack (CTP) technology is another key highlight. By eliminating the module stage and directly integrating cells into battery packs, CTP simplifies manufacturing processes and components while improving both energy density and price competitiveness. SK On will present four pack solutions: pouch CTP, large surface cooling (LSC) CTP, integrated prismatic pouch packs and immersion cooling packs. The LSC system applies cooling plates between cell contact surfaces, delivering up to three times greater cooling performance compared to conventional indirect cooling methods.
The exhibition space will be divided into three zones: Leading Tech, Future Tech and Core Tech.
In the Leading Tech zone, visitors can explore an “R&D Studio” that illustrates battery design and manufacturing processes, along with the prismatic “On-vent Cell.” Using laser engraving technology, the On-vent Cell allows flexible design of gas and heat vent locations, enhancing structural adaptability.
The Future Tech zone will showcase immersion cooling technology jointly developed with SK Enmove, presented in both module-based and CTP-based formats. SK On will also introduce ultra-fast charging technology capable of charging a battery from 10% to 80% in seven minutes. In addition, next-generation battery concepts will be displayed, including 1,000Wh/L sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries, polymer-oxide composite batteries and lithium metal batteries.
The Core Tech zone will feature CTP solutions, the ESS DC block and high-energy-density LFP cells.
Through its participation at InterBattery 2026, SK On aims to demonstrate its evolution into a comprehensive battery company spanning EVs, ESS, robotics and other future industries. The company plans to strengthen its global presence by delivering products that combine cost competitiveness with enhanced safety performance.
An SK On official said the technologies and products introduced at the exhibition represent the company’s transition beyond EVs toward new growth markets such as ESS and robotics, adding that SK On intends to lead the global market with competitive and safe battery solutions.
