As South Korea moves closer to the transition of wartime operational control, development has officially begun on the country’s first artificial intelligence–based allied command and control system designed to enhance Korean-led combined operations with the United States.

Defense Acquisition Program Administration and Hanwha Systems announced that a project kickoff meeting for the Allied Korea Joint Command Control System (AKJCCS) performance improvement program was held on January 23 at the Defense Convention Center in Yongsan, Seoul. Hanwha Systems was selected as the prime contractor for the program in December last year.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the Defense Acquisition Program Administration and Hanwha Systems, as well as the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command, and other related organizations. Participants discussed detailed schedules, technology development directions, and inter-agency cooperation measures.

The AKJCCS performance upgrade project involves a comprehensive redevelopment of the core system responsible for command and control of combined ROK-U.S. operations across the Korean Peninsula. For the first time among domestic command and control systems, the upgraded AKJCCS will incorporate AI-based situational analysis and automated decision-support capabilities. It will also adopt a cloud-based server architecture and virtual desktop infrastructure, enabling more efficient information sharing optimized for modern combined operational environments.

The South Korean military plans to deploy the upgraded AKJCCS for operational use by 2029. Leveraging its accumulated expertise in command and control systems and defense ICT technologies, Hanwha Systems is expected to play a central role in building a future combined operations framework led by the Korean military.
