SK Hynix is drawing investor attention after announcing a quarterly cash dividend of 375 won per common share and saying it will finalize additional shareholder return measures in the third quarter.

The chipmaker said on Aug. 7 that it will pay a total of 273.3 billion won in dividends, with a dividend yield of 0.02%. The record date is Aug. 31, and the dividend will be paid within one month of the record date.

For investors, however, the 375-won dividend itself is not the main focus. The company said it is actively reviewing additional measures to enhance shareholder value and plans to finalize and announce the details during the third quarter.

Expectations for additional returns have risen as SK Hynix's earnings and cash-generation capacity have surged. The company posted record quarterly results in the second quarter, with revenue of 79.32 trillion won and operating profit of 60.54 trillion won.

Strong demand for high-value memory products, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM), driven by the expansion of AI data centers, has been a major contributor to the earnings growth.

SK Hynix's operating margin reached 76% in the second quarter, highlighting the sharp improvement in profitability and cash-generation capacity. The stronger financial position has fueled expectations that the company could go beyond its existing shareholder return policy.

Under its shareholder return policy for 2025-2027, SK Hynix plans to use 50% of its cumulative free cash flow (FCF) as a source of shareholder returns. The company also raised its annual fixed dividend to 1,500 won per share from 1,200 won, a 25% increase.

The policy also allows SK Hynix to consider additional shareholder returns before the end of the policy period if it achieves its financial targets earlier than expected or if FCF increases significantly.

During its second-quarter earnings call on July 29, SK Hynix said it was reviewing various additional shareholder return measures, noting that stronger cash generation should allow it to meaningfully expand returns while maintaining investment for future growth and financial stability.

Among the options being watched by the market are share buybacks and cancellations. Unlike cash dividends, share cancellations reduce the number of outstanding shares and can increase the value attributable to existing shareholders.

Market speculation has grown that SK Hynix could combine share buybacks or cancellations with higher dividends, although the company has not disclosed a specific size or structure for the additional measures.

The actual scale of the package announced in the third quarter is therefore expected to be an important factor for the stock. The key question will be whether SK Hynix can meet elevated market expectations while maintaining sufficient funds for investment.

The company is unlikely to return all of its available cash to shareholders. It is also increasing investment to expand production capacity and strengthen its technology capabilities in response to growing demand for AI memory.

SK Hynix is expanding production facilities in Yongin and Cheongju while continuing to focus on maintaining financial strength and securing investment capacity for future growth.

As AI-driven earnings continue to rise, investor attention is increasingly shifting from how much SK Hynix earns to how it allocates the cash it generates.

The shareholder return package to be announced in the third quarter could therefore become an important catalyst for a further reassessment of SK Hynix's corporate value, depending on its size and structure.
