Campaign highlights crypto payment platforms’ push from trading services toward everyday consumer spending infrastructure

Amsterdam—OKX Europe said on May 21 that it will run a limited cashback campaign for OKX Card users in Europe from May 21 to 31, marking Bitcoin Pizza Day on May 22. The campaign allows eligible users to receive up to 100% cashback on one pizza or food purchase worth up to 20 USDG, equivalent to about €17.20.

Bitcoin Pizza Day refers to the 2010 transaction in which programmer Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas. At the time, the payment was worth about $41 and is widely regarded as one of the earliest documented real-world purchases made with Bitcoin.

The OKX campaign is structured around this historical reference, but its broader implication lies in the attempt to position crypto-linked payment cards as part of everyday spending infrastructure. Eligible users must hold an active OKX Card, complete KYC verification, and make a payment with USDG at a qualifying food merchant during the campaign period. Cashback is expected to be credited to users’ OKX Pay accounts within seven days after the campaign ends.

OKX Card is powered by Mastercard and is available to KYC-verified users across Europe. The Bitcoin Pizza Day campaign is separate from the standard cashback benefits applied to eligible OKX Card purchases.

While the event has a promotional character, it also reflects a wider shift in the digital asset industry. Crypto platforms are increasingly seeking to move beyond trading and asset custody by building payment interfaces that connect stablecoins, cards, merchant networks and consumer spending. The practical adoption of such services will depend not only on user incentives, but also on regulatory compliance, merchant acceptance and the stability of settlement infrastructure.
