January 6, 2026ㅡ Escalating political and financial pressure on Venezuela is helping push Bitcoin higher, reinforcing the cryptocurrency’s growing role as a hedge against geopolitical risk, according to Nigel Green, CEO of deVere Group.
Following Washington’s recent actions against Caracas, Bitcoin has risen about 6%, highlighting how rapidly geopolitical developments are now being priced into digital asset markets.
“Political risk is no longer reflected only in equities and bonds,” Green said. “When concerns over sanctions, capital controls, or currency stability intensify, investors increasingly turn to assets that are portable, liquid, and independent of any single government. Bitcoin is filling that role.”

The rally has lifted Bitcoin back into the $92,000–$94,000 range, outperforming many traditional safe-haven assets and underscoring how crypto markets have become a primary channel for expressing geopolitical risk.
Green noted that Bitcoin’s 24/7 trading structure allows investors to respond instantly to global shocks—an advantage over traditional markets with limited trading hours. “This immediacy is accelerating Bitcoin’s transition from speculative asset to strategic allocation,” he said.
Venezuela remains a stark example of how economic stress drives crypto adoption. Years of inflation, currency controls, and restricted access to banking have pushed widespread use of digital assets, with the country ranking among the world’s most crypto-active on a per-capita basis.
“What began as a grassroots response to economic hardship is now being recognized globally,” Green said. “Censorship resistance, global liquidity, and independence from central banks are no longer niche qualities—they’re increasingly essential in a world of persistent geopolitical instability.”
As sanctions and regulatory risks continue to disrupt traditional financial channels, Bitcoin’s always-open market is emerging as a real-time barometer of global uncertainty, with investors turning to crypto markets well before traditional assets fully reprice risk.
