LG Electronics has begun operations at a new home appliance plant in Brazil, expanding its local manufacturing footprint as the company seeks to strengthen its position in Latin America and accelerate growth across emerging markets.

The new facility in Paraná began operations on Aug. 13, according to LG Electronics. It is the company’s second manufacturing base in Brazil, following its Manaus plant in the state of Amazonas, which was established in 1996.

The Paraná facility has an annual production capacity of approximately 600,000 refrigerators. By increasing local production, LG aims to reduce its reliance on products imported from Southeast Asian manufacturing sites and improve its ability to respond to demand in Brazil and neighboring Latin American markets.

The company is also using the new plant as a platform to introduce more locally tailored products, taking into account Brazilian consumers’ lifestyles, residential environments and purchasing preferences.

The facility incorporates artificial intelligence and industrial robotics as part of a smart factory system designed to improve manufacturing efficiency and process stability.

Vision AI technology is being used to inspect products for quality issues, while a digital twin-based monitoring system is designed to identify potential abnormalities in production processes before they develop into larger problems.

Automated equipment, including articulated robots, has also been deployed for tasks such as transporting refrigerator doors. LG expects the automation to improve worker safety while reducing production inefficiencies and manufacturing costs.

The expansion comes as LG Electronics increasingly views emerging markets in the Global South as an important source of future growth.

The company has adopted a two-track regional strategy. In developed markets such as North America and Europe, LG is focusing on premium products and profitability, while in emerging markets it is expanding sales in the mass-market segment alongside products tailored to local demand.

India, Brazil and Saudi Arabia have emerged as three of the company’s key Global South markets. Their combined sales reached approximately 6.2 trillion won last year, more than 20% higher than in 2023. The growth rate was more than twice that of LG Electronics’ overall revenue growth during the same period.

Brazil is particularly important because of the size of its domestic consumer market and its role as a major manufacturing and distribution hub in Latin America.

The Paraná plant gives LG greater flexibility in managing supply and production while potentially reducing logistics costs and exposure to fluctuations in international supply chains. Local manufacturing could also allow the company to adjust product specifications and production volumes more quickly as market conditions change.

The move reflects a broader shift among global manufacturers toward building production capacity closer to major consumer markets. For companies operating in emerging economies, local manufacturing can provide advantages not only in cost and logistics but also in product localization and market responsiveness.

LG’s challenge will be to translate the additional production capacity into stronger market share and sustainable profitability. Brazil’s home appliance market remains highly competitive, with global and local manufacturers competing across a broad range of price points.

The company therefore plans to combine expanded manufacturing capacity with products designed specifically for local consumers. The Paraná facility is expected to strengthen LG’s ability to supply the Brazilian market while providing additional production capacity that can support its broader Latin American business.

LG Electronics HS Business Division President Baik Seung-tae said the new plant would help the company provide a stable supply of products and introduce appliances tailored to local consumers, with the goal of strengthening its market position in Brazil and across Latin America.

With the Paraná plant now operating alongside its long-established Manaus facility, LG Electronics is building a broader manufacturing network in Brazil. Whether the expanded footprint becomes a major driver of growth will depend on how effectively the company combines local production, competitive pricing and consumer-focused products in one of Latin America’s largest appliance markets.
