HJ Shipbuilding & Construction is drawing renewed attention from the market as analysts predict the company could enter a new growth phase driven by expanding opportunities in U.S. Navy programs and the global naval maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) market.

Brokerage firms say the company’s stable special-purpose vessel business, combined with potential participation in U.S. naval projects, may lead to a broader revaluation of its long-term corporate value.

On May 27, DS Investment & Securities initiated coverage on HJ Shipbuilding & Construction with a “Buy” rating and a target price of 37,000 won, citing expected growth from U.S. Navy-related business expansion and improving profitability in the shipbuilding division.

The outlook comes as the United States accelerates efforts to modernize and expand its naval fleet. Industry observers note that capacity shortages and delivery delays at U.S. shipyards are creating new opportunities for South Korean shipbuilders with advanced naval construction capabilities.

HJ Shipbuilding & Construction is considered a potential beneficiary due to its experience building high-speed landing craft and other special-purpose naval vessels. Analysts say the company could become a competitive participant in future amphibious support vessel programs pursued by the U.S. Navy.

Some industry observers also believe successful participation in U.S. military shipbuilding projects could evolve into broader long-term defense partnerships between Korean shipbuilders and the American defense sector.

The company’s MRO business is also emerging as a key growth pillar. After recently carrying out maintenance work for U.S. Navy vessels, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction is viewed as having strengthened its credibility in operational capability and technical execution.

Unlike new shipbuilding orders, naval MRO projects are generally regarded as higher-margin and more recurring in nature, making them attractive sources of stable cash flow within the shipbuilding industry.

Analysts say the U.S. Navy’s sizable annual maintenance budget could significantly reshape the earnings structure of Korean shipbuilders if additional contracts materialize. A growing share of MRO-related revenue could also help reduce the cyclical volatility traditionally associated with commercial shipbuilding.

While profitability temporarily weakened in the first quarter, analysts expect earnings momentum to improve in the second half of the year as higher-priced orders secured previously begin contributing to revenue and special-purpose vessel operations normalize.

The possible acquisition of the Gunsan shipyard is also viewed as a major strategic variable. If completed, the acquisition could enable HJ Shipbuilding & Construction to expand into large commercial vessel markets such as VLCCs (Very Large Crude Carriers) while simultaneously securing additional facilities for naval MRO operations.

Industry analysts say the combination of commercial shipbuilding, naval vessels, and MRO services could significantly strengthen the company’s business portfolio over the long term.

Market attention is increasingly focused on whether HJ Shipbuilding & Construction can establish defense and naval services as dual growth engines alongside its traditional shipbuilding business.

“The United States is attempting to rebuild its domestic shipbuilding competitiveness, but expanding production capacity in the short term will not be easy,” an industry official said. “This is creating new opportunities for Korean shipbuilders with proven naval construction and MRO capabilities.”
