DL E&C announced on November 19 that CEO Park Sang-shin and senior executives met with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Busan to discuss cooperation in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
President Marcos, who visited Korea to attend the APEC Summit held in Gyeongju, arranged the meeting during his official schedule. Discussions centered on DL E&C’s potential participation in the Philippine government's ongoing energy and infrastructure development projects. The Philippine government, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality and address rapidly increasing electricity demand, expressed strong interest in cooperation on nuclear power plant development.
Earlier, DL E&C signed an MOU with Meralco, the largest power company in the Philippines, to support the adoption of small modular reactors (SMRs). SMRs are approximately one-hundredth the size of traditional nuclear reactors, require less land, offer enhanced safety, and can be installed near industrial zones or major power demand centers. With electricity consumption surging due to AI industry expansion, SMRs are gaining attention as a key zero-carbon energy source.
DL E&C’s partnership with the Philippines dates back to 1993 when it won a contract for gas desulfurization facilities from the Philippine National Oil Company. The company has since executed 15 projects in the country—more than any other Korean contractor. In 2015, it successfully completed the RMP-2 refinery project for Petron, valued at approximately 2.25 trillion KRW, marking the largest plant project ever undertaken in Southeast Asia by a Korean construction firm.
CEO Park Sang-shin stated, “DL E&C is a company with proven technological expertise and experience in the energy sector,” adding, “We are confident that we can be the optimal partner for the Philippines as it advances its energy projects.”
