Samsung Heavy Industries is intensifying its efforts to enter the U.S. shipbuilding market.
On November 6th, the company announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with DSEC, a leading ship design and equipment procurement company, to establish a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening Korea-U.S. shipbuilding cooperation and expanding its global business footprint.
DSEC has extensive experience collaborating with U.S. shipyards across various sectors, including commercial ships and specialized vessels, providing design services, equipment supply, maintenance, and shipyard consulting. The partnership with Samsung Heavy Industries is expected to create technological synergies and enhance competitiveness.
Through this alliance, the two companies plan to pursue joint projects in several areas, including the construction of medium-sized merchant ships, modernization consulting for shipyards, ship conversion and LNG carrier cargo tank repairs, the provision of green and digital solutions, and R&D facility utilization.
Samsung Heavy Industries aims to combine its advanced shipbuilding and offshore construction capabilities with DSEC’s design and procurement expertise in the U.S. to develop an optimized value chain for ongoing projects like the MASGA initiative led by the U.S. Navy. The company also intends to expand its business scope into other markets, such as North America and Southeast Asia.
A Samsung Heavy Industries spokesperson said, “DSEC is an ideal partner with rich experience in ship design and procurement in the U.S.,” and added, “This partnership will serve as a catalyst for new growth, following our strategic collaboration with Big Marine Group.”
