Samsung Electronics has begun mass production of a next-generation enterprise solid-state drive designed for the artificial intelligence data center market, strengthening its position in the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure sector.

By extending its AI memory business beyond high-bandwidth memory (HBM) into high-performance storage, the South Korean technology giant aims to establish itself as a provider of comprehensive memory solutions for the AI era.

Samsung said on July 8 that it has started mass production of the PM1763, an enterprise SSD based on the next-generation PCIe 6.0 interface. The product is designed as a key storage solution for Nvidia’s upcoming Vera Rubin AI computing platform, helping improve the efficiency of data processing that increasingly determines overall AI server performance.

The launch is seen as an important step in Samsung’s efforts to broaden its presence across the AI semiconductor ecosystem. While competition in the AI server market has largely centered on graphics processing units and HBM, high-performance SSDs are becoming increasingly critical as data centers seek to store and deliver massive volumes of data at higher speeds.

The rapid expansion of generative AI services is driving an unprecedented increase in the amount of data processed by data centers. Large-scale data movement is required not only for training AI models but also during inference, exposing cost and capacity limitations in conventional memory architectures.

Enterprise SSDs are attracting particular attention as a new memory tier that can complement DRAM amid growing demand for key-value, or KV, cache capacity in AI inference workloads.

With their high capacity and ability to process data reliably, eSSDs are emerging as essential infrastructure components for AI servers. The shift is also intensifying competition among global semiconductor companies seeking to capture the next phase of AI infrastructure investment.

The market outlook remains strong. Global research firms expect the enterprise SSD market to expand rapidly alongside continued investment in AI data centers. Major cloud providers and AI service companies are increasing spending on server infrastructure to boost data-processing capacity, supporting expectations for sustained demand for high-performance storage.

Samsung has already established a strong position in the enterprise SSD market. According to market research firm TrendForce, the company remains among the global leaders in eSSD market share.

Its vertically integrated capabilities spanning NAND flash design, controllers and firmware are widely regarded as a key competitive advantage.

The PM1763 also forms part of Samsung’s broader strategy to expand its AI memory portfolio. The company is targeting Nvidia’s next-generation AI platform with a range of memory technologies, including HBM4, low-power memory modules and enterprise SSDs.

The strategy goes beyond supplying individual components. Samsung is seeking to provide an integrated portfolio of memory solutions required to build next-generation AI servers.

As improvements in GPU performance alone are increasingly insufficient to maximize AI processing efficiency, the ability to optimize memory bandwidth and storage performance together is expected to become a major competitive factor.

Samsung’s ability to combine its HBM and NAND flash technologies could also strengthen its position in negotiations with major global AI data center customers. By expanding cooperation with Nvidia and other key players in the AI semiconductor ecosystem, the company is expected to increase its presence in the next-generation AI infrastructure market.

“In the future AI server market, competition will increasingly depend not only on GPU performance but also on how quickly and reliably data can be supplied,” a semiconductor industry official said. “Companies capable of providing a broad range of memory solutions, from HBM to enterprise SSDs, are likely to gain an advantage in the AI infrastructure market.”

Samsung plans to continue expanding its next-generation memory portfolio as it seeks to establish itself as a comprehensive solutions provider for the AI era and strengthen its influence in the global data center market.
