LS Eco Energy has taken a significant step into the railway infrastructure market by supplying railway communication cables to Hyundai Rotem, strengthening its presence in the high-value specialty cable sector and securing a new growth engine for future expansion.
The company announced on June 11 that its Vietnamese manufacturing subsidiary, LSCV, recently completed its first delivery of railway communication cables to Hyundai Rotem. The cables will be installed in hydrogen-powered tram vehicles scheduled to operate in Daejeon and Ulsan.
Railway communication cables play a critical role in connecting onboard control systems and communication networks, enabling real-time transmission of operational data throughout the train. Because they are directly related to safe railway operations, the products must meet stringent standards for durability, reliability, and performance.
Industry observers view the supply agreement as more than a routine delivery. The railway industry is known for its highly specialized and certification-driven supply chain, where new entrants often face significant barriers to entry. Once suppliers establish a proven track record, however, opportunities for participation in future projects can increase substantially.
The partnership may also create additional business opportunities as Hyundai Rotem continues to expand its presence in both domestic urban rail projects and overseas railway contracts.
“Railway specialty cables represent a high-value market with considerably higher technical requirements than conventional power cables,” said an industry official. “Becoming part of Hyundai Rotem’s supply chain demonstrates recognized product competitiveness and could enhance LS Eco Energy’s prospects in future international railway projects.”
LS Eco Energy has recently been reshaping its business portfolio toward higher-margin sectors, including submarine cables, rare earth materials, power infrastructure, and specialized industrial cables. The railway communication cable business is viewed as a natural extension of the company’s strategy to increase its presence in industrial infrastructure markets.
The company is also expected to benefit from growing railway infrastructure investment in Vietnam. The Vietnamese government is advancing large-scale transportation projects, including the North–South High-Speed Railway and metro system expansions in major cities, which are expected to drive demand for both communication and power specialty cables.
Building on the latest supply agreement, LS Eco Energy plans to deepen cooperation with Hyundai Rotem while leveraging its production base in Vietnam to pursue opportunities across Southeast Asia’s expanding railway infrastructure market.
“This supply contract represents an important starting point for the expansion of our railway specialty cable business,” a company representative said. “We will continue to strengthen our capabilities to participate not only in domestic railway projects but also in global railway developments linked to the overseas expansion of Korea’s railway industry.”
