Clinical trial to evaluate safety and pharmacological profile in healthy volunteers
Botulinum toxin is increasingly being explored beyond its traditional use in aesthetic medicine, with researchers investigating its potential as a treatment for neurological and psychiatric disorders. Growing scientific interest in novel mechanisms for treating depression and other mental health conditions has prompted pharmaceutical companies to expand clinical development into new therapeutic areas.
Chong Kun Dang Bio announced on Wednesday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the Investigational New Drug (IND) application for a Phase 1 clinical trial of its botulinum toxin product, TYEMVERS® 100 Units, for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
The study will be conducted by Healis Therapeutics, Chong Kun Dang Bio's U.S. development partner, while Chong Kun Dang Bio will manufacture and supply the investigational drug. The company said it plans to support the clinical program through its globally compliant Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) production and quality management system.
The Phase 1 trial will enroll healthy adult volunteers in an open-label, single ascending dose (SAD) study designed to evaluate the drug's safety, tolerability, and pharmacodynamic profile. Based on the results, Healis Therapeutics plans to expand clinical development into patients with Major Depressive Disorder as well as other neuropsychiatric conditions.
Depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and social anxiety disorder collectively affect more than 500 million people worldwide. Despite the widespread use of antidepressants and psychotherapy, many patients experience inadequate treatment responses or adverse effects, highlighting the need for innovative therapeutic options.
The FDA's clearance marks an important milestone for TYEMVERS® as Chong Kun Dang Bio seeks to expand the product beyond the aesthetic market into therapeutic applications. The approval also represents a significant step in validating the company's technology and manufacturing capabilities in the global pharmaceutical market.
TYEMVERS® is produced using a proprietary bacterial strain licensed from a German research institution. The product features a human serum albumin-free (HSA-Free) formulation, contains L-histidine as a stabilizer, and has obtained Halal certification, characteristics that the company believes strengthen its competitiveness in the premium global botulinum toxin market.
Chong Kun Dang Bio also plans to launch a 200-unit version of TYEMVERS® in early August, complementing the existing 100-unit product. The higher-dose formulation is expected to provide physicians with a more efficient treatment option for larger treatment areas and procedures requiring greater toxin volumes.
"The FDA's clearance of our Phase 1 clinical trial represents an important milestone demonstrating TYEMVERS®'s potential beyond aesthetic indications," a Chong Kun Dang Bio official said. "We will work closely with Healis Therapeutics to support the successful completion of the clinical trial and advance TYEMVERS® as a potential new treatment option for patients with Major Depressive Disorder."
