Samsung Electronics is strengthening its push into AI-powered home appliances by rolling out a major software update for its Bespoke AI Family Hub refrigerators in the United States, adding more advanced food recognition, conversational voice control and personalized daily features without requiring customers to purchase new hardware.
The update, which begins distribution on May 11, reflects Samsung’s broader strategy of turning connected home appliances into evolving AI platforms rather than fixed-function devices.
The company said the latest upgrade significantly expands the refrigerator’s AI-based food management capabilities through an enhanced version of AI Vision integrated with Google’s Gemini AI technology. The system can now recognize a wider range of fresh ingredients and packaged food products with improved accuracy, including branded and region-specific items.
Samsung also added optical character recognition (OCR) technology to improve identification of packaged goods sold across different global markets. Based on usage patterns, the refrigerator can proactively notify users when commonly consumed items are running low, a feature designed to simplify grocery planning and reduce food waste.
The software update also introduces a more advanced version of Samsung’s voice assistant Bixby, enabling more natural conversational interactions inside the kitchen environment.
Instead of relying on fixed voice commands, users can speak to the refrigerator more casually, with the system responding contextually. Samsung demonstrated examples such as asking the refrigerator to activate Sphere Ice mode for drinks or automatically increase cooling performance during hot weather conditions.
Industry observers see the update as part of a wider trend among consumer electronics companies to integrate generative AI into everyday appliances in ways that go beyond simple automation.
Samsung is also expanding its “Now Brief” personalized dashboard, which appears on the Family Hub display. The updated interface includes recipe recommendations, ingredient-based meal suggestions and personalized content tied to users’ schedules, reminders and health-related information.
The company said voice recognition technology can identify individual household members and deliver customized content such as calendar updates, birthday reminders, news interests and wellness data including sleep and activity summaries.
Samsung has increasingly positioned its Bespoke appliance lineup as a central platform for its AI home ecosystem strategy. Rather than limiting AI services to smartphones and TVs, the company is attempting to connect appliances, home management and personalized digital services into a broader smart-home experience.
The update will initially roll out to select Bespoke AI Refrigerator Family Hub models in the U.S., with expansion planned for additional AI Home models and overseas markets throughout 2026.
