LG Energy Solution (LGES) has secured a major battery supply contract for Google's largest solar and energy storage system (ESS) project to date, reinforcing its leadership in North America's fast-growing grid-scale energy storage market.

According to industry sources on Tuesday, Google and U.S. independent power producer (IPP) Cypress Creek Energy recently announced plans to develop the Steel River Energy Center, a large-scale solar-plus-storage project designed to support the surging electricity demand from AI data centers.

Under the project, an initial 2GWh ESS will be installed, with total storage capacity expected to expand to 2.9GWh by 2029. LG Energy Solution has been selected as the battery supplier for the project. While financial terms were not disclosed, industry estimates value the contract at several hundred billion won.

The Steel River Energy Center is Google's largest single solar and battery storage project globally. Google plans to purchase the facility's entire electricity output to secure a stable supply of renewable energy for its expanding AI infrastructure.

LG Energy Solution will supply its JF2 DC Link, a containerized ESS solution powered by locally manufactured lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. Produced in North America, the system is designed to deliver high operational stability, advanced power management, and enhanced fire safety while meeting stringent regional supply chain requirements.

The agreement further strengthens LG Energy Solution's presence in the rapidly expanding AI energy infrastructure market. As hyperscale AI data centers require enormous amounts of electricity, major technology companies are accelerating investments in renewable energy generation and large-scale battery storage to ensure reliable power supplies.

The company has been expanding its North American ESS manufacturing footprint through facilities in Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, and Canada. An additional production line scheduled to begin operations later this year is expected to further increase its battery manufacturing capacity dedicated to the North American market.

The latest deal follows LG Energy Solution's recent selection as the battery supplier for DTE Energy's AI data center project in Michigan, highlighting the company's growing portfolio of large-scale energy infrastructure projects in the United States.

Industry analysts said LG Energy Solution's extensive local manufacturing capabilities have become a significant competitive advantage as U.S. customers increasingly prioritize domestically produced battery systems amid evolving supply chain and trade policies.

With global investment in AI infrastructure continuing to accelerate, demand for grid-scale energy storage is expected to rise sharply, positioning LG Energy Solution to benefit from growing opportunities in the high-value ESS market.
