Daewoong Pharmaceutical announced on Oct. 30 that it has submitted an application to South Korea’s Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency for product approval of Enbropet (active ingredient: inavogliflozin), a diabetes treatment for companion dogs.
Enbropet is a reformulated, animal-appropriate dosing version of Daewoong’s human SGLT-2 inhibitor diabetes drug Enblose. The company said animal clinical trials have demonstrated the drug’s efficacy and safety.
If approved, Enbropet would become the world’s first SGLT-2 class diabetes treatment for dogs. Daewoong reported Phase 2 results in 2022, advanced to Phase 3 in 2023, and completed the latest trials this year, supporting the product’s scientific validity through published findings.
Phase 3 data showed that about 73.3% of treated dogs experienced a marked reduction in fructosamine, a blood glucose marker, while approximately 60% exhibited improvement in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). In most cases, insulin usage either stabilized or decreased, indicating the potential for more stable insulin management when used in combination therapy.
Veterinary diabetes in dogs resembles human type 1 diabetes and typically requires insulin for control. Because insulin deficiency can lead to ketoacidosis and excess dosing can cause hypoglycemic shock, treatment safety is critical.
Enbropet’s mechanism—promoting urinary glucose excretion—can reduce insulin dependence, lowering associated risks and supporting more stable glycemic control as an adjunct therapy. The drug is also positioned to address limitations of conventional therapies, which often see gradually increasing insulin requirements, potentially slowing disease progression.
The global market for animal diabetes treatments is projected to grow from about $547 million in 2024 to roughly $1.1 billion by 2033.
Daewoong said it will use Enbropet as a launchpad for a broader animal new-drug business. The company currently has multiple veterinary pipelines, including a canine atopic dermatitis treatment, and is actively pursuing technology-out licensing discussions with overseas animal health firms.
Park Sung-soo, CEO of Daewoong Pharmaceutical, said, “Enbropet offers a new adjunctive option in a field that previously relied primarily on insulin alone. We will continue to explore additional indications using the SGLT-2 inhibitor mechanism.”
