Celltrion is accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) across its research, manufacturing, and corporate operations as the company moves to strengthen its competitiveness in the rapidly evolving global pharmaceutical industry.

According to industry sources on Monday, Celltrion has recently been building a company-wide “AI transformation (AX)” framework that applies AI technologies across major business areas, including research and development (R&D), production facilities, and office environments.

The company aims not only to improve operational efficiency through automation, but also to establish AI as a core infrastructure for decision-making, drug development, and manufacturing optimization.

The most significant changes are emerging in pharmaceutical R&D. Celltrion is strengthening data-driven research systems by combining AI with bioinformatics technologies to support processes ranging from novel target discovery and candidate validation to compound optimization.

By analyzing large volumes of research data, AI is expected to improve the probability of identifying promising drug candidates while reducing development time and costs.

The company is also expanding internal training programs to strengthen researchers’ AI capabilities while increasing collaboration with external AI specialists and technology firms. Through these efforts, Celltrion aims to build an open innovation ecosystem that combines in-house research expertise with external technological capabilities.

Manufacturing operations are also undergoing rapid transformation. Celltrion plans to accelerate the implementation of AI-powered smart factories at new active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) production facilities currently being developed in Songdo, South Korea.

The company intends to significantly increase automation levels by introducing autonomous logistics robots, automated warehouse systems, collaborative robots, and intelligent manufacturing management platforms.

Initially, automation efforts will focus on repetitive and standardized processes. Over time, Celltrion plans to expand AI applications into more advanced areas such as quality control and production optimization.

The company is also reviewing the potential introduction of humanoid robots as part of its long-term vision for next-generation unmanned manufacturing systems.

AI deployment has already produced visible results in office operations as well. Celltrion said AI systems applied to document search, comparison, data analysis, and report-writing support have significantly reduced task processing times.

In particular, AI chatbots linked to the company’s electronic document management systems are helping employees quickly search vast databases and retrieve information in real time, improving overall workplace productivity.

To maximize AI adoption, Celltrion is combining a bottom-up approach — in which business units directly develop automation tools tailored to operational needs — with a top-down strategy involving company-wide development of specialized AI solutions and shared digital platforms.

Industry analysts say Celltrion’s efforts represent more than simple technology adoption. Instead, the company is attempting to fundamentally reshape how pharmaceutical organizations operate by embedding AI into research, manufacturing, and administrative workflows.

By improving drug development success rates, enhancing production efficiency, and transforming workplace processes, Celltrion is accelerating its transition toward becoming an AI-driven global biopharmaceutical company, analysts said.
