Dallas—The International News Media Association said on May 28 that it has released a new report examining how flexible access models, including pay-per-article, day passes and week passes, are being tested by publishers as part of broader efforts to expand paying audiences.
The report, Unlocking Subscription Growth with Flexible Access, looks at how changing consumer expectations, subscription fatigue and declining referral traffic from search and social platforms are affecting digital journalism revenue models. It draws on research and customer experiments conducted by The Washington Post and was written by Anjali Iyer, the newspaper’s global head of subscriptions.
The report argues that the traditional full-subscription model may not serve all potential readers, particularly those who are unwilling to commit to recurring payments but may be open to lower-friction, short-term access. Flexible-access products are presented as a way to create additional entry points into paid relationships, while continuing to support subscription businesses.
According to the report, 74 percent of Americans encounter news paywalls at least occasionally, but only 1 percent ultimately make a purchase. More than 70 percent of surveyed respondents found week-pass access appealing, while 65 percent expressed interest in day passes.
The report also says that flexible-access offers shown alongside subscriptions increased overall paywall conversion rates. The Washington Post found that one in 10 day-pass customers either repurchased or subscribed within 180 days.
Iyer notes that publishers should reassess concerns about subscription cannibalisation, arguing that flexible-access products can complement subscriptions when pricing and product positioning are clearly structured.
The report includes examples from publishers and technology companies including The Toronto Star, Gannett, Google, Axate, Fewcents, Content Credits, Blendle and Post News.
The report concludes that flexible-access models may offer publishers another route to audience development, retention and revenue diversification at a time when acquisition costs are rising and AI-driven changes are altering how audiences discover information.
Unlocking Subscription Growth with Flexible Access is available to INMA members and for purchase through INMA.
