AI-driven semiconductor rally pushes Samsung Electronics into a new valuation era amid surging HBM demand and renewed investor confidence

Samsung Electronics Co. has officially entered the KRW 300,000 stock price era, marking a historic milestone for South Korea’s capital market and signaling a dramatic turnaround for the nation’s largest company.

On May 22, Samsung Electronics shares crossed the KRW 300,000 threshold during regular trading, a sharp reversal from just two years ago when the company was derided as “50,000-won Samsung” amid prolonged weakness in the semiconductor sector.

The symbolic significance of the KRW 300,000 level extends far beyond the stock itself. As South Korea’s largest listed company by market capitalization and one of the country’s most widely held retail stocks, Samsung Electronics is often viewed as a barometer for the broader Korean economy and equity market. Market analysts say the milestone reflects renewed confidence in Korea’s semiconductor industry as artificial intelligence infrastructure spending accelerates worldwide.

Unlike previous rallies driven by smartphones or consumer electronics, the current surge is largely tied to explosive demand for AI semiconductors. The rapid expansion of generative AI services has sharply increased demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and next-generation memory technologies, leading analysts to significantly raise earnings forecasts for Samsung Electronics.

Brokerages increasingly expect Samsung’s semiconductor division to once again become the company’s primary growth engine. Several financial institutions have sharply upgraded annual operating profit projections as memory pricing recovers and AI-related chip demand continues to expand.

Investor sentiment has also improved following Samsung Electronics’ aggressive shareholder return policies. The company recently announced large-scale share buybacks, stock cancellations, and expanded shareholder return initiatives, moves that helped restore market confidence after years of criticism over chronic undervaluation.

Analysts say Samsung Electronics is gradually shedding its long-standing image as an undervalued blue-chip manufacturer and is instead being re-evaluated as a global AI semiconductor leader.

Still, market observers caution that breaking through KRW 300,000 does not automatically guarantee a sustained rally. The company’s future stock performance will likely depend on whether it can secure leadership in the rapidly evolving AI semiconductor market.

Samsung Electronics continues to face intense competition in the HBM sector from rival SK hynix, which currently holds strong momentum in the AI memory market. Investors are closely watching how quickly Samsung can expand its presence in next-generation HBM4 products and advanced semiconductor packaging technologies.

The company’s non-memory semiconductor business also remains a critical challenge. Samsung’s foundry and system semiconductor divisions still require substantial profitability improvements, and analysts believe long-term corporate valuation will depend heavily on whether those businesses can regain competitiveness alongside the booming memory segment.

Despite the risks, overall sentiment among market analysts remains largely optimistic. Many expect Samsung Electronics to benefit from sustained AI data center investment, rising memory prices, and ongoing global semiconductor supply constraints for the foreseeable future.

Some brokerages have already raised their target price estimates for Samsung Electronics to as high as KRW 500,000, arguing that the company could enter an entirely new valuation phase if it successfully strengthens both its HBM competitiveness and non-memory semiconductor operations.

“Samsung Electronics surpassing KRW 300,000 is not just about a rising stock price,” a securities industry official said. “It signals that Korea’s semiconductor industry is being revalued as a core supplier in the AI era. If Samsung strengthens its HBM competitiveness and improves its non-memory business performance, the company could move into a completely new valuation range.”
