The mood in global wealth rankings has turned sharply bipolar: crypto fortunes are shrinking at high speed, while AI-linked tech wealth is inflating just as fast.

According to estimates from Forbes, cryptocurrency’s latest slide has wiped more than $60 billion from the net worth of industry billionaires since October. At least ten crypto moguls have lost $1 billion or more on paper, a reminder that in digital-asset markets, wealth can evaporate as quickly as it once appeared.

No one has felt the swing more dramatically than Changpeng Zhao, better known as CZ, founder and former CEO of Binance. Long regarded as the wealthiest figure in crypto, Zhao has seen the largest absolute drop in fortune as token prices sag and trading volumes cool. The pullback underscores how tightly crypto wealth remains tied to market sentiment rather than stable cash flow or diversified industrial assets.

The downturn marks a psychological shift as much as a financial one. Just a year ago, crypto leaders were being compared to early internet pioneers, riding a narrative of financial reinvention. Today, the conversation has tilted toward regulation, risk, and the limits of speculative momentum. Paper wealth built on token valuations has proven especially vulnerable in a higher-rate, risk-off environment.

At the same time, a very different kind of tech story is rewriting the upper tiers of the rich list.

A rally in AI-related stocks has pushed shares of Nvidia higher, lifting the fortune of its CEO, Jensen Huang. As the chipmaker’s valuation climbs on surging demand for AI hardware, Huang has leapfrogged several legacy billionaires in global rankings. He recently moved ahead of Bernard Arnault and his family of LVMH to become the world’s seventh-richest person.

The broader tech rebound has also been visible on Wall Street. The Nasdaq closed up 0.9% in a recent session, recovering from a pullback that began the previous week, while Nvidia shares climbed to their highest level since late January. Investors appear willing to pay a premium for companies positioned at the heart of the AI infrastructure buildout, even as they retreat from more speculative corners of the digital economy.

Together, the diverging fortunes of crypto tycoons and AI chip leaders highlight a deeper market rotation. Capital is not fleeing technology altogether—it is becoming more selective. Assets tied to real revenue, physical supply chains, and near-term enterprise demand are being rewarded. Those tied primarily to market enthusiasm and token price appreciation are being repriced, sometimes brutally.

For now, the world’s wealth leaderboard is telling a clear story: in 2026, silicon is in, and coins are under pressure.
