SK hynix has begun supplying samples of its next-generation high-bandwidth memory (HBM) product, the 12-high HBM4E, to major global customers, marking another step in its effort to strengthen its leadership in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence (AI) memory market.
The company announced on June 18 that it has shipped HBM4E 12-high samples to key customers and initiated the product qualification process. Leveraging its accumulated expertise in HBM development and mass production, SK hynix aims to bring the new memory solution to market in time to meet growing demand for advanced AI systems.
HBM4E is designed to deliver significant improvements in both performance and energy efficiency over the previous-generation HBM4. The product achieves data processing speeds of up to 16Gbps per pin while improving power efficiency by more than 20%, enabling faster and more efficient handling of the massive data workloads required for AI training and inference.
The memory also incorporates advanced interface technologies and design optimizations that reduce data-transfer latency and ensure stable operation in high-bandwidth computing environments. These enhancements are expected to improve overall system efficiency and help alleviate bottlenecks in next-generation AI data centers and large-scale computing platforms.
SK hynix applied its advanced MR-MUF (Mass Reflow Molded Underfill) technology to the new product, enabling a 48GB capacity in a 12-high stack while enhancing structural stability. The company said thermal resistance has been reduced by approximately 17% compared with HBM4, allowing the memory to maintain reliable performance even under demanding computing workloads.
Industry observers view the latest sample shipment as further evidence of SK hynix’s technological leadership in the HBM sector. As demand for AI accelerators and high-performance GPUs continues to surge, HBM has become a critical component for next-generation computing systems, making early product development and customer validation increasingly important competitive advantages.
“The HBM race is no longer simply about manufacturing capacity,” said an industry expert. “Competition is increasingly focused on delivering superior performance, energy efficiency, and thermal stability. HBM4E has strong potential to become a key memory solution for future AI servers and data center infrastructure.”
Market analysts believe that if SK hynix maintains its momentum from HBM3E to HBM4 and now HBM4E, it could further strengthen its competitive position in the AI memory market. Continued investment by global technology companies in AI infrastructure is expected to support long-term demand for advanced HBM products.
Ahn Hyun, President and Chief Development Officer (CDO) of SK hynix, said, “We have extended our industry-leading technological competitiveness and manufacturing capabilities into the HBM4E generation, creating a foundation for continued AI innovation. Through close collaboration with our partners, we will proactively deliver the value the market demands and further solidify our leadership as a full-stack AI memory creator.”
