LS ELECTRIC has completed construction of a second ultra-high-voltage (UHV) transformer production facility at its Busan plant, accelerating its entry into the global UHV transformer market with a strong focus on North America.

The company announced on December 4 that a completion ceremony for the second production building was held at its Busan facility located in Hwajeon Industrial Complex, Gangseo-gu. The event was attended by approximately 200 participants, including LS ELECTRIC Chairman Koo Ja-kyun, LS Group Chairman Koo Ja-eun, and Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon.

A total of 100.8 billion KRW was invested in the expansion, which added roughly 18,059 square meters of floor space. The new production building is 1.3 times larger than the first facility and increases manufacturing capacity by 2.3 times, significantly boosting UHV transformer output. As a result, Busan plant’s annual production capability has risen from 200 billion KRW to 600 billion KRW in value, and the company aims to achieve 1 trillion KRW in sales from the site alone next year.

“This expansion represents an aggressive investment approach aimed at increasing our market share in the global UHV power sector,” said LS ELECTRIC Chairman Koo Ja-kyun. “With more than 420 billion KRW invested since 2010, the Busan plant will continue to grow as a core manufacturing base for the global UHV market. With the new facility, we now possess world-class production and testing infrastructure for UHV transformers.”

LS ELECTRIC’s Busan plant supports full production capabilities across the UHV transformer lineup, ranging from 154kV to 550kV. The facility incorporates advanced manufacturing equipment and optimized process design, ensuring stringent quality control. Notably, it is the only site in Korea capable of producing transformers for HVDC (high-voltage direct current) transmission systems, and the expansion will further strengthen its capacity to meet growing demand for HVDC infrastructure.

The company has continued to enhance its manufacturing competitiveness by investing 210 billion KRW in the plant’s first production building in 2010, followed by the addition of an HVDC-dedicated facility in 2011, and now the completion of the second building, totaling 420 billion KRW in cumulative investment.

LS ELECTRIC has also recently secured major UHV transformer supply contracts with large data centers and utility companies in North America, further establishing its global market presence.

Driven by the rapid expansion of AI data centers, replacement of aging power grids, and increased investment in renewable energy infrastructure, the global power equipment market has entered a structural growth phase often described as a “power supercycle.” In particular, the U.S. transformer market is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 7.7 percent and expand to more than USD 25.7 billion by 2034, more than doubling its current size.

“With this new production facility, we are better positioned to respond quickly to soaring market demand for UHV transformers and HVDC converter transformers,” said an LS ELECTRIC official.
