LS Electric is accelerating its expansion in Japan—one of the world’s four largest energy storage system (ESS) markets—after securing the largest order volume among Korean companies operating in the country.

LS Electric announced on January 8 that it recorded total ESS orders worth KRW 61.2 billion in Japan last year. The achievement marks the biggest order intake by a Korean company in the Japanese ESS market and underscores LS Electric’s growing competitiveness in the region.

The company has steadily strengthened its position in Japan by expanding its business scope across the entire ESS value chain. In addition to EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) projects, LS Electric supplies key components such as power conversion systems (PCS) and has also invested in renewable energy power generation projects.

LS Electric’s ability to provide a full lineup of ESS core equipment—excluding batteries—combined with years of project execution experience has earned strong trust in Japan’s power market, which is known for its stringent technical standards and quality requirements.

The company officially entered the Japanese ESS market in 2017 by successfully building Japan’s first solar power plant integrated with an ESS, the Chitose Solar Power Plant in Hokkaido. Since then, LS Electric has continued to expand its footprint nationwide.

In 2024, the company secured nearly half of Tokyo Metropolitan Government–subsidized ESS projects, strengthening its presence in the capital region. In April of the same year, it won the Watari ESS project in Miyagi Prefecture, a large-scale project featuring 20 MW of PCS capacity and 90 MWh of battery storage with a total value of KRW 36 billion. In November, LS Electric also secured a KRW 19 billion contract for an ESS system integration project that included the bulk supply of power equipment such as PCS, further supporting stable revenue growth across Japan.

Leveraging its Japanese subsidiary as a strategic hub, LS Electric is pursuing a localization-focused sales strategy and developing products tailored to the characteristics of the Japanese power grid. Optimized system design, reliable construction and operational expertise, and high-quality performance suitable for long-term renewable energy projects have helped the company build lasting trust with local customers.

Japan’s ESS market is expected to grow rapidly, driven by the expansion of renewable energy and rising demand for grid stabilization. Market size is projected to increase from approximately USD 343.6 million in 2024 to about USD 1.096 billion by 2030, highlighting its strong growth potential.

LS Electric plans to accelerate its global expansion by building on its technological capabilities and project credibility accumulated in key strategic ESS markets, including Japan, the United States and Europe. Globally, the ESS market is also growing quickly amid the energy transition, with market size expected to expand from approximately USD 46.7 billion in 2024 to USD 187.1 billion by 2033.

An LS Electric official said, “Achieving the largest order volume among Korean companies in Japan’s ESS market reflects comprehensive recognition of our technology, execution capabilities and localization strategy. Building on our success in Japan, we will further strengthen our efforts to expand in global ESS markets such as the U.S. and Europe.”
