HS Hyosung Advanced Materials is stepping up efforts to expand its carbon-fiber business into high-value applications such as aerospace, drones and defense, as demand grows for lightweight materials with high strength and durability.
The company is participating in CAMX 2026, North America's largest composites and advanced materials exhibition, being held from Sept. 22 to 24 in Atlanta, Georgia. More than 500 companies are expected to take part in the event, which is projected to draw around 7,000 visitors.
HS Hyosung Advanced Materials has participated in CAMX every year since the exhibition was first held in 2014. This year's showcase focuses on carbon-fiber applications across a broader range of industries, including aerospace and advanced mobility.
Among the products on display are 3K carbon fiber, 3K fabrics and composite materials for drones, as well as high-pressure vessels designed for satellites. The company is also highlighting applications beyond conventional automotive components, including carbon-fiber wheels, hoods and brake discs.
Carbon fiber is increasingly being used in sports and leisure products such as hockey sticks, pickleball paddles and surfboards, as well as in electrical conductor cores. At the same time, aerospace, defense and drone applications are emerging as key growth areas where weight reduction and high mechanical strength are critical.
HS Hyosung Advanced Materials is presenting its proprietary TANSOME® carbon fiber as the foundation of its technology portfolio. The company developed carbon fiber using its own technology in 2011, becoming the first Korean company to develop the material independently, and began commercial production at its Jeonju plant in 2013.
Carbon fiber weighs roughly one-quarter as much as steel while offering about 10 times the strength and seven times the elasticity, making it attractive for applications where reducing weight without sacrificing structural performance is essential.
The company is also expanding its manufacturing footprint outside Korea. It established a production base in China in 2024 and is preparing to begin operations at a new facility in Vietnam in the second half of this year.
The Korea-China-Vietnam production network is expected to strengthen the company's ability to provide a stable supply of carbon fiber to customers in global markets.
HS Hyosung Advanced Materials has also been developing higher-performance carbon fibers for demanding applications. Its H3065 product is a T-1000-class ultra-high-strength carbon fiber, designed to address demand from advanced industries requiring greater strength and performance.
The expansion comes as carbon-fiber producers increasingly compete not only on material performance but also on their ability to provide consistent quality and reliable global supply. For aerospace customers in particular, certification, production stability and supply-chain resilience are important factors in supplier selection.
HS Hyosung Advanced Materials obtained the AS9100 aerospace quality management certification in 2021 as part of its efforts to strengthen its presence in the aerospace market.
“By leveraging our high-performance carbon-fiber technologies and stable supply capabilities, we will provide differentiated carbon-fiber solutions for advanced industries, including aerospace,” said Lim Jin-dal, CEO of HS Hyosung Advanced Materials.
